Students learning to drive in school hours will be rewarded with NCEA credits from April next year.
The government says schools will be able to offer two credits towards NCEA level 1 for passing the learner licence theory test.

Four credits will be offered for NCEA level two for passing a restricted licence and an additional two credits at the same level for gaining a full licence.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says too many people are missing out on jobs because they can't drive and too many were going into the court system for driving without a licence.
'Schools are not being asked to assess, they're simply being asked to record it when students achieve it.”
Hekia says schools aren't required to teach students to drive but could choose to incorporate the theory test into their Year 11 English programme if they wanted to.
The actual testing would still be carried out by relevant licensing agents.
The initiative has been in the works for 12 months, and schools will be able to choose if they offer credits to their students.

Way to devalue the NCEA standards

If you set the bar too low, the qualification has no status. By allowing credits to be achieved by learning to drive, playing sport, picking up rubbish etc, you lower the recognition for the student who studied to pass the academic exams. If drivers are breaking the law by driving without a licence, punish the offenders. If burglars break into houses and cut themselves on glass, does that mean all home owners should leave the houses unlocked, or change the windows to safety glass?
What next?

NCEA credits for advanced bottom wiping perhaps? If this is a National Party initiative I'd hate to see what would happen under a Labour Greens NZ First alliance? Maybe the possibility of bottom wiping credits wouldn't seem so ridiculous after all.
Dumbing down

What an indictment of both the justice system and driving standards in New Zealand. People can't be bothered to learn to drive or pass a test and think the risk of a trip to court is worth it - because they know a wet bus ticket is waiting. Little wonder that there are so many "accidents" on New Zealand roads. How about if you are caught driving without a license you go to prison and don't come out until you have passed an advanced driving test?
