Students’ big ‘YES’ to premix treats

An Otumoetai College enterprise group's premix treat for the health conscious has won the students the Bay of Plenty Supreme Award in The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme.

Tauranga Chamber of Commerce this week announced Casca Enterprises the regional winners of YES – a learning programme offering students the opportunity to create a business and run it for a year.

The winning team will now represent the Bay at the national YES awards in Wellington on December 9.

Casca Enterprises created Do-Lish – a premix treat for the health conscious, which is available in two flavours: raw cacao chocolate and raspberry bliss balls.

Made from all natural ingredients, including coconut oil and vanilla bean paste, the mixes are 'a convenient, delicious and healthy treat”.

YES regional coordinator Emma Harvey says the high standard of business ideas this year is exciting.

'All teams demonstrated excellent business practice, and innovation and sustainability featured very highly in each company.”

The runner up team is Neeah Enterprises, also from Otumoetai College, which produced hanging herb gardens aimed at the home cook who wanted easy access to fresh herbs and looked attractive in the home.

Neeah self-produced the herb gardens from locally-sourced supplies. The group also picked up the Customer Service Award.

At total of seven Bay schools and 129 students entered their business ideas into the competition. Nationally, the Young Enterprise Scheme has more than 120 schools, about 600 companies and 2700 students submitting business ideas.

The Tauranga Chamber of Commerce is delighted to coordinate The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme and congratulates all the students, teachers, mentors and members of the business community who have generously given their time.

The support of the local sponsors is also recognised, including Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Mills Reef Restaurant and Bayfair Shopping Centre.
