World Cup's a family affair in Omokoroa

While all Kiwi's proudly lay claim to our mighty All Blacks, Omokoroa Pre-school have gone all out in their support ahead of this weekend's Rugby World Cup final.

But it's not just the current All Blacks that these rugby-mad kids are thinking about, with two ex-players forming a special link to the Magaret Drive establishment.

Former star Greg Rowlands is grandad to one-year-old Zoe Cooney, while the late Peter Henderson, who passed away last year, was the grandparent of two-year-old Brooklyn Henderson.

Omokoroa Pre-school teacher Jo Smith says all of the children have gotten into supporting the All Blacks at this year's competition.

'Some of the children are a little young, but the older children get really excited about it,” says Jo.

'They know who the captain is and what numbers the players wear. We also have an All Blacks wall, which the kids really like.”

Jo says although Zoe is a little young to understand that her grandfather was an All Black, Brooklyn did and appeared to be enjoying the rugby theme.

Zoe's parents have brought memorabilia from her grandfather's time in the All Blacks.

Playing on the wing, Peter gained seven test caps from 1949-1950, while former Tauranga Boys' College fullback Greg appeared 161 times for the Steamers and four times for his country in 1976.

Jo says the children had learnt a lot about the history of the All Blacks and they are all hoping for a win when the team take on Australia on Sunday morning.

So what's Jo's prediction for Sunday's match? 'Oh I'm definitely going for the All Blacks to win, 18-3,” she says.
