No holiday for top athletes

It's certainly no holiday for Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students who are racking up sporting successes around the country.

Mount Maunganui surfer Alex Dive is one of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic students achieving great success these holidays.

New student for 2011, Joe Moretti is carving up the country's surf scene, posting some impressive results and placing in the top six of the under-18 division.

Seventeen year old Joe has also been included in the 21-strong training squad to prepare for the nine-day junior worlds contest beginning May 21.

Twenty year old Rebecca Kingsford made no race of the women's division of the Mount Maunganui Surfbreaker Triathlon on December 28, finishing nearly three minutes clear of her closest rival.

Not to rest on her laurels, the second year student also won first place in the Whangamata round of the national tri-series last week.

Another surfing hot-shot to watch for is High Performance Academy Scholarship winner Alex Dive. The talented Mount surfer headed to Dunedin to give it his all in the national surf competition, and made it through to the quarter finals against tough national competition.

Brad Kendall is teeing off in Melbourne this week as part of the six-strong Srixon Academy players representing the best of New Zealand's amateur golfers at the prestigious Master of the Amateurs at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

The engineering student will compete against players from around the world before heading off to New South Wales this week in preparation for the Lake Macquarie Invitational.

Recent graduate Sam O'Dea paired off with younger brother Ben over the weekend at the North Harbour Open Beach Volleyball tournament at Mairangi Bay, beating elder brother Edwin and his partner is a final described by many as ‘thrilling'.

Part of a national tour, the brothers are playing in Hamilton and Karapiro before heading to the final at Mount Maunganui next weekend.
