Waikato University's new professor of coastal science, Dr Chris Battershill, is being given an official, unofficial Maori welcome on Tuesday.
Tauranga Moana tangata whenua is hosting a whakatau on Chris's behalf on Tuesday starting at 9.30am, and finishing at about 2pm.
The Whakatau is less formal that the Powhiri. A Whakatau includes the same roles for men and women and allows for the use of languages other than Te Reo Maori.
The Whakatau will take place at The Atrium at the Windermere campus of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.
Chris will be based in Tauranga to head the new chair in coastal science, which is the result of a joint memorandum of agreement between the BOP Regional Council and the university, prioritising coastal science in the Bay of Plenty.
The new post is an integral part of the Intercoast programme, established by Waikato University and Bremen University in Germany to create a major centre of marine research in the Bay of Plenty.

By poking the canoe in the frame do the Moana spin team think there might be some mileage with the Foreshore & Seabed tripe currently being circulated by National & the Maori party ? Its difficult to think of any other reason.I hope that Dr Battershill isn't one to be easily taken in by it all.
