The Tauranga school principal who helped usher in ‘school speed zones' across the city now wants the safety measure outside every school in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Otumoetai Primary School principal Geoff Opie lobbied Tauranga City Council to introduce the speed zones, which reduce the speed outside schools from 50km/h to 40km/h.
The zones are currently in place outside six Tauranga schools.
Geoff says it is expensive to introduce the zones, estimated to cost between $20,000 and $30,000 per school.
'Every school around Tauranga should have a reduced speed zone,” says Geoff.
'They certainly do slow things down in general terms.”
He believes about three to four new speed zones will be implemented outside Tauranga schools this year.
Schools are allocated zones based on need and are prioritised on a list.
Geoff says there are some issues associated with implementing the safety measure outside all schools.
He says this includes how to manage speed reduction outside rural schools where the speed limit is 100km/h.

speed zones around schools

I could not agree more fully.Wether in the suburbs or in the rural areas, the speed limit should be 4okm an hour. How much dose it take to take your foot off the accelerator to the life of a child no matter how old or arrogant kids can be coming to or out of school? SPEED ZONES are a must. Some areas camera monitored and perhaps paid by those caught speeding in the school zone.

This guy might do better directing his energies to address the appalling behavior of senior students crossing roads misusing pedestrian crossings riding on footpaths and across pedestrian crossings. In addition the actions of many parents dropping off & picking their children up from schools leaves plenty to be desired. They are the authors of their own misfortune and accidents looking for a place to happen.

It's the proposers of this over the top stuff that need to justify it with full facts & figures . Crededentials are that unlike you I know what I see and don't drive around with tunnel vision.I will comment on whatever I like and if the truth hurts don't read or comment it.Alternatively let's have your version events for dissection.

Didnt I see a blog on this site yesterday by ''Cricklewood''(?) that now looks to have been deleted or censored as its no longer there which fully set out the position pretty well. Its about time schools started educating their pupils and parents on road safety and policing it.Can Mr Opie please point to any school related traffic accidents over the past 10years that have been caused by motorists in the Tauranga area.Experience shows most motorists travel past schools well below the speed limit as they are concerned about what hairbrain action may arise .

I agree with what Rocky is saying and if anything it doesn't go far enough .There will probably not be any details provided because to best of my knowledge there have been no significant school traffic accidents caused by speeding motorists.
No Evidence No Need

Seems from the failure to respond to a simple question that it must be concluded that over the past 10 years there have been no 'school zone' related traffic accidents of any consequence caused by motorists in the Tauranga area.Until the proper evidence is supplied the proponents for reductions in speed limits and their 'pinky' bleeding heart do gooders support team should stop PC kneejerking. This is costing TCC ratepayers a fortune estimated at $250000 for 6 schools to date.Their energies might be better directed to educating pupils and parents on road safety issues especially around schools.
