Tractor heaven in Hahei

Every man, woman and child will be lining the pavements of Hahei with the return of the much-loved Tractor Bash this weekend.

The fun starts with a barbecue down at the Hahei Fire Station tonight, followed by a boot sale at the community hall on Saturday, and wrapping up with the grand parade on the Sunday morning.

From pristine tractors to rust buckets and everything in between, about 30 machines are expected to roll through the streets of Hahei at a leisurely pace.

Sponsored by the Hahei Business Association, the Tractor Bash is first and foremost about fun for the whole family and any profits generated are pumped straight back into the community.

Organising committee member Kay Harrison says this is, nor ever will be, your run of the mill tractor parade.

'Everybody who registers decorates their tractors in some way and we've had some amazing ones in the past,” explains Kay. 'We've had sharks, a fire engine, some have gone with movie themes, anything at all.

'There are so many tractors here in Hahei because we don't have a proper concrete ramp, so if you have a boat you need a tractor. They've sort of become iconic to us.”

Tractors taking part in the parade will vie for three trophies which are up for grabs, plus a stash of prizes that have been donated by local businesses.

There's also plenty of drink and food stalls, plus heaps of entertainment and games for children, as well as an auction where one lucky punter will win…a rock.

'Someone had a brilliant idea for the first bash of donating a rock from their farm and we were thinking ‘what the hell do we do with a rock?' so we decided to auction it.

'It stays outside the Hahei Beach Store, so it's a donation really but you get your name engraved on the plaque that sits with it - you don't get to take the rock home,” Kay says laughing.

The bash starts tonight at 6pm with a 'registration evening” at the Hahei Fire Station, which Kay admits is more of a meet and greet where people can share some laughs and a sausage or two.

Then tomorrow a boot sale will take place at the Hahei Community Centre where people can buy, sell or exchange hidden treasures from 10.30 am.

It will be followed by a quiz night hosted by the Hot Water Beach Surf Lifesaving Club at the community centre, starting at 8pm.

Sunday's parade will weave through the streets of Hahei starting at 10am, with the tractors leading the crowd down to Hot Water Beach for the Autumn swim run by the surf lifesaving club at 11am.

'Pretty much all of Hahei turns out for the bash and we even get people from the surrounding areas popping down to check it out.

'It's such a fun weekend and we can't wait to see all the happy smiling faces when the tractors roll though town on Sunday."

The Tractor Bash was held in brilliant sunshine and humour. Tractors got themselves dressed as "Hahei Summer Holiday", "M&Ms", "The Nerds" and many others and paraded down the streets of Hahei to a fun filled afternoon of food & games & prizes all generously donated by the local business community. A 1k swim was officiated by the Hot Water Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and, yes, The Rock was once again bought by a local family. Thanks go to all those who made this such a wonderful day for the families of Hahei.
