Psa: Government aid for growers

The government is committing $25 million, subject to a dollar-for-dollar match from the kiwifruit industry, to fund an urgent aggressive containment strategy to fight Psa.

Biosecurity Minister David Carter.

Biosecurity Minister David Carter says that if the plan is supported by kiwifruit growers, $50 million will be immediately available to tackle the spread of the disease and minimise its impact on New Zealand's $1.5 billion kiwifruit industry.
'This is the government and industry taking a leadership role to ensure the future of one of New Zealand's brightest primary sector industries,” says David.
'Today's announcement is a major funding commitment by the government and a decision not taken lightly.

'It recognises the compelling case put forward by the kiwifruit industry to ensure its future viability.”
The funding package will cover a range of actions, including limited grower compensation for income loss, management techniques and continued research into the disease.
MAF will be involved in the governance of the programme and the response will be subject to ongoing review by technical experts.
'The government has been working closely with the kiwifruit industry on this issue since day one. This is a very rapid response. It is the best example of industry and government working together in a joint approach to tackle a serious biosecurity incursion,” says David.
'Once the initial stages of response are complete and infection rates minimised, the industry will put a long-term pest management strategy in place, which will be funded by industry.”
'We are looking at the way of the future for the management of biosecurity incursions.”
Industry consultation on the proposal will take place over the next two days, and if supported by growers, the plan will be implemented immediately.

Income Loss

Why should the tax payer fork out for the growers loss of income? They are in business the same as everyone else. Did any of the companies which went belly up during the recession get any compensation from the government?

What is a growers association for...

...if not to insure itself and its members against a calamity as PSA? $50 million of taxpayers' money is being misappropriated to support corporate risks while we citizens have to fend for ourselves while having to feed the blown-out-of-proportion administration machine. This is not sustainable. It will end one way or another.

Small price really.

It's unfortunate that the govt needs to fork out some money to assist the growers however I would suspect the implications of not helping would be a lot worse, especially for Te Puke. Let's face it, other than kiwifruit it really doesn't have much going on. Another dammed if you do, dammed if you don't scenario for the govt.

Great News

At least the government understands what the industry means to the BOP and NZ. Learn how to read SpeakUp - its not $50 million of taxpayers momey - half of that is from the kiwifruit industry. And as for Pamian, what would you prefer - the total collapse of the industry so taxpayers can pay the unemployment benefit instead for thousands of workers who would be out of a job if the industry collapses, and it won't just be kiwifruit workers. Many retailers and towns rely on this income. Learn reality guys.
