Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry officials are dismissing concerns that kiwifruit growing wild in the Bay of Plenty could be infected with Psa.
Forest & Bird is urging MAF to eradicate wild kiwifruit because it could be harbouring the Psa bacteria.
MAF response manager David Yard believes eliminating kiwifruit is not a priority, according to media reports.
Kaimai Mamaku campaign chair and former Forest & Bird national president Dr Peter Maddison says wild kiwifruit vines are invading gullies next to kiwifruit orchards.
He says MAF should start coordinating a comprehensive programme to remove them, particularly from gullies in the Te Puke area, the current centre of PSA infections. 'Now is an ideal opportunity to eradicate these vines and reinstate the areas as native wildlife corridors,” says Peter.

Are MAF right?

Why have MAF dismissed Forest and Bird's concerns? I see that Forest and Bird recognise the wilding kiwifruit are mainly the green variety, rather than the initially infected gold variety, but believe the wild vines could still act as reservoirs for re-infestation of kiwifruit orchards. Be wise to replant the gullys in natives to create wildlife corridors as well!
