The 2010 local government elections are incomplete with a by-election for the Western Bay of Plenty District Council Omokoroa Community Board still pending.
The by-election is being held because one of the four candidates for a position on it, Garry Webber, was elected as a District Councillor for the Kaimai Ward. This means his seat on the Omokoroa Community Board must be filled by someone else.
Bay of Plenty registrar of electors Lesley Christophers is urging people who live in the Omokoroa area to make sure they are enrolled correctly for a by-election.
'A by-election for Omokoroa Community Board takes place in just 12 weeks time,” says Bay of Plenty registrar of electors Lesley Christophers.
Once ballots are received the public will have until February 11, 2011 to cast their vote.
To be able to vote, affected people may need to adjust their electoral role details.
'All eligible people will need to enrol or update their enrolment details by 23 December 2010 to vote in the by-election.”
'Have you moved house or changed your name or other details? – Then you will need to update your enrolment details to make sure these are correct.
'Only those people who are correctly enrolled will receive voting papers in the mail and be able to have a say in the election.
'This makes it very important for newly eligible electors to enrol as soon as possible and for those already enrolled to check that their enrolment details are up to date.
'Enrolling is quick and easy. Enrolment forms are available by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56), by Freetexting your name and address to 3676, from any PostShop or by requesting or downloading one from the elections website www.elections.org.nz”
People can update their details by filling in a new enrolment form, going online to www.elections.org.nz or filling in a change of address form at any PostShop.

Sounds like a typical bureaucratic waste of time. Why not appoint the next highest poller from the recent election?
