Mall to re-open for weekend

Repairs to the hole scoured out of The Mall in Pilot Bay following a water main burst on Monday night are expected to be completed before the weekend.

The re-opening of The Mall, near Prince Avenue, means the Generation Homes Women's Triathlon will not need to find a new venue for their event, which starts at 8.30am in Pilot Bay on Sunday.

The Mall is set to re-open ahead of the weekend.

The water main burst at around 8.20pm on Monday night, scouring out a large hole in the street, and flooding basements in nearby properties.

Mount Maunganui fire fighters were called to the scene and spent two-and-a-half hours pumping out one of the basements and moving property out of the water.

The water from the 250mm main also scoured the beach where it ran into Pilot Bay.

A big thanks to council and the contractors for working hard to get the road open for the public and for our Generation Homes Women's Tri event on Sunday.
