Unravelling fatal crashes

New Zealand is taking a ‘safe system' approach to reducing trauma on New Zealand roads. But what does that mean?

The Difference Between Life and Death is an engaging 20-minute film explaining the safe system, which forms the basis of the government's Safer Journeys strategy.

A screen shot of the video, which can be viewed below..

'The approach is a proven way to save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roads,” says a statement from police.

'It acknowledges that even responsible people sometimes make mistakes - and that speed, road design, vehicle design and other factors all contribute.”

Originally developed in Sweden, it has been applied in New Zealand since 2010.

The film unravels a fatal crash and reconstructs it in a safe system, looking at factors which might have prevented the tragedy.

It includes interviews with police officers and other road safety experts.

There have been three fatal crashes in Tauranga in the last five days.

On Friday, January 30, Grant Coley died after stepping in front of a truck on State Highway 2, north of Te Puna.

A child then died on Sunday night after a car crashed with a power pole on Oropi Road, near Castles Road, about 7.45pm. Read more here.

The third death happened last night when a man was hit by a car on Welcome Bay Road. Police are still investigating the matter.

to safer roads is more revenue gathering. They fine people for the most stupid infringements where just a goodwill word with the driver would have done the trick. When are they going to get it and realize that road safety isn't all about gathering revenue.
