Horan prepares for election battle

Brendan Horan is confident New Zealand First will get back into parliament after the 2011 election and has put his hand up to become the party's Tauranga candidate.

Brendan Horan hopes to be elected as New Zealand First's candidate in Tauranga by the end of the year.

The former TV One weather man and Tauranga business owner says the turnout at the party's annul conference in Christchurch over the weekend is proof that New Zealand First has the legs to get over the election finish line.

He believes the party will not only gain more than five per cent of the party vote at the next election but will also win numerous electorates.

Depending on where he is ranked on the New Zealand First list, Brendan could get into parliament if the party gets over the five per cent threshold.

If he doesn't manage to wrestle the Tauranga electorate from Simon Bridges, who won the seat by more than 10,000 votes at the last election, he will still get into parliament if he is placed within the top five on the party list.

But Brendan says he does not want to get into parliament on the list, he wants to win Tauranga.

'I want to serve Tauranga because this city could be so far ahead than what it is.”

Brendan, who owns three businesses that employ 16 people, says he would be taking a pay cut to represent Tauranga in the capital.

'I'd rather be here where I can go fishing and surfing and enjoy spending time with my family.

'I don't want to spend my week in Wellington but I'll do it.”

He did not reveal which party he would prefer to support if New Zealand First held the balance of power, saying an adoption of the party's economic policies is a major factor.

Winston Peters revealed at the conference that the current government offered him a raft of top overseas roles, including ambassadorships, after it gained power.

Brendan believes it was a move to get Winston out of the country and stop New Zealand First re-entering parliament.

NZ 1st could take a significant role in Cabinet after the 2011 election. And that will depend on how NZ First runs its campaigns.Do whatever it takes to get rid of the Key Government. Life under their leadership bodes ill for ordinary Kiwis. Simon who?....
