More cohesive council promised

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby is looking forward to his third term and promising a more cohesive approach from the new council.

Mayor Stuart Crosby wants to see a better level of communication on the new Tauranga City Council. He is pictured here with his wife Lesley moments after hearing the news he was re-elected.

There are three changes to the Tauranga City Council with the new faces of Larry Baldock, Terry Molloy and Tony Christiansen.

Missing from the previous council are Mike Baker and Hayden Evans. Greg Brownless did not stand for re-election.

Larry and Terry both have previous council experience, and Stuart says he's personally known Tony for more than 20 years.

'He'll bring a new dimension, and a lot of enthusiasm and passion, that's the way Tony operates,” says Stuart.

'The commitment I have with regard to the new council is to build a more cohesive group of councillors.

'A very clear message from the election campaign was the electorate wants a more cohesive group of councillors. That doesn't mean we have to always agree but they expect a higher standard of behaviour, and so I'm personally totally committed to focus on that.”

For Stuart personally, the election result is 'humbling”. He's been returned with 17,566 votes, 13,054 clear of the next highest polling mayoral candidate, Murray Guy.

There are new mayors in Auckland, Hamilton, and Dunedin and Wellington's mayor Kerry Prendergast is teetering on a 40 vote knife edge, awaiting the special votes count.

'I'm quite humbled by that support, but at the end of the day you can lose that support quite quickly if you say and do the wrong things,” says Stuart.

With 24 years experience in local body politics, he says that's unlikely.

'The second term was difficult. I'm looking forward to this term. I spoke to all the councillors on Saturday to emphasise the point of being a more cohesive unit. That's talking about the politics of it, there's still all the usual day-to-day stuff.

'We have got some big challenges ahead and one of the things we will be focusing on is the finances of council and how we fund growth in the city.

'There will be a lot of discussion and financial remodelling. That is a huge task on its own, the projections have changed and we need to change with it.”

City council staff have been working on the figures since the triple-whammy rates increases were announced. Stuart says the new scenarios promise a reduction in the projections. The councillors will be presented with the draft budgets for Christmas holiday reading, with the community being presented with the new options in March 2011.

One of the two councillors to fail in his re-election bid is Hayden Evans, whose political career has been one of the more colourful in the last term.

'I'm not too phased, in my line of stuff there's plenty of work,” says Hayden.

Returning Mount Maunganui ward councillor Wayne Moultrie says there were a few surprises with the result, but he's hoping the new council will be more focused than the last council.

'I think that is a goal we should all be working towards.”

Shock, horror, disbelief! Who the hell would vote for more debt, higher rates and less democracy??? Why would you re-elect spendthrift public servants? Why would you agree with obscene council wages and the number of council bureaucrats (450)? Who wouldn't agree that earnings of the top officials smell of public parasitism??? Who the hell can't see what these schmucks of administrators will do to the Tauranga people and infrastructure? Are we really a country full of halfwits? What a sad day for the Bay!

Is this another promise that can't be kept. How can Stuart Crosby who states proven leadership as his banner now say that he is going to work towards a more cohesive council when over the last 6 years as Mayor and leader he has failed to do so. More importantly he has basicly the same group of Councillors still in power so this promise is a nonsense.

Cohesive Council

It will certainly be more cohesive without the destructive influence of Hayden Evans. Time has finally run out, no more Tick Tock.

It could have been worse

Well done Tauranga in getting rid of Hevans - shame though he had some goood ideas at times, but his methods werw his downfall. And good job keeping out the Dillon and the Pankhurst, but really we needed a clear out of all the old guard as well from the mayor down. We'll really have to watch this lot - they will think they have an open-ended mandate now.

Couldn't achieve it over last three years lacks the necessary leadership skills and looks like actually encouraged animosity even though didn,t need to as always held the casting vote.Might have had 20% support on voting day but for the rest of us it sure don't feel like paradise.Step out of line just one more time and the public will probably have someones guts for garters.

I Like Stuart

Personally I like Stuart Crosby! That does not mean that I agree with the way he does business, but he is a good man, and undoubtedly and passionately wants the best for the city that he has once again been voted in as mayor for the second term. I like Stuart even more when he says things like this: The way out of the problem is we strengthen our economy . . . that means strengthening ties with the private sector. Mr Crosby said council needed to "open the gates" to the private sector, providing services and land (not sure about that last word!) for them to grow their businesses instead of putting up barriers." It is generally supporting the private sector, which takes the risk. We don't take the risk, THEY take the risk. If they do well, they can employ more people and pay higher salaries and wages. This ladies and gentlemen is the single best thing ANY local bureaucrat has EVER said in all the years I have been paying attention. What has suddenly provoked this epiphany I wonder? Why has it taken so long for people in such powerful places to understand such a simple concept? It remains to be seen if this will actually take place, but this is what I have been banging on about for years, and I am stunned that Stuart understands the importance of this also. A couple of important points that strike me from Stuart's statement above though are: A): What does he mean by "INSTEAD OF PUTTING UP BARRIERS!" Does this mean that up until NOW the council HAVE been putting up barriers? (I believe they have, but but does this mean that council knew they were doing this?) and B): Will council now STOP going into competition with the Private Sector" to provide these things? Because it is IMPOSSIBLE for the private sector to compete with services provided by council and government. The private sector MUST run at a profit to do anything otherwise it will go bankrupt - The council and government do NOT have to be profitable, and will DRIVE the private sector bankrupt if in direct competition. Art galleries, swimming pools, venues, museums etc etc The first thing council must do is to allow the CBD to prosper again, and do you know what they need to make this happen? NOTHING! That's right! Nothing . . . apart from hand the parking situation over to the CBD business community. Then get the hell out of the way and let private business do what they do best. It is their livelihoods at stake - they have the most interest in their businesses succeeding - not the council. They have already made fledgling noises to show they are prepared to take control back from the council, what with putting up a christmas tree, and meetings of concerned retailers concerning the parking situation etc. At the last local election I was excited about the prospects of some of the councillors, and some of the things they said, but after 3 years it has all proved to be a load of hot air, meaning that they either changed their minds about what they said, OR the way they went about achieving their goals has FAILED, and proven ineffective. If it is the latter of the two, then those same councillors need to admit they went about things in a poor and unprincipled fashion and change their strategy or else they will be doomed to failing once again. PREDICTION: Unfortunately my prediction is that they will NOT learn from those failings. They will have the Best intentions, but FAIL once again. (bang! - Ouch! - Bang! - Ouch!) I also predict that Larry Baldock and Tony Christiansen (although very nice people I am sure) will be an absolute disaster, and I dread to see the effect these two individuals will have. A small mercy I suppose is that at least Anne Pankhurst, Mary Dillon or Hori Leaming missed out on inflicting us with their versions of "for the public good."

Brilleaux : Some of what you say makes a little bit of sense and your conclusions about a few of the more(?) candidates is on target but your assessment of Crosby and his dribblings is the stuff fiction is made of - nauseating in fact.Next time you feel one of these funny farm moments coming on keep it to yourself.

Poor Rocky - he's feeling sick

Rocky - you are obviously the kind of person who would love to prevent people from saying things you disagree with - You should go and live in the middle East - You would like it there! When you get over your nausea tell me which parts in particular are the bits that you don't agree with? There is a section that QUOTES what Crosby said, so it cant be that bit.

READ WHAT WAS SAID

Brilleaux ; Partly correct but didn't I say you made a bit of sense.Yes I do feel sick about political propoganda and you will see I only referred to your assessment of Crosby. You're not much of a judge of character in this instance

nice bloke

I cant see why stating that "I like the man" is propoganda! He is a nice bloke! - he is not evil or nasty, and he has the best intentions at heart for the city - which I am certain we ALL have. I disagree with how he goes about getting the best for the city, and as far as I am concerned it does not work. That doesnt mean he is not a good guy - It just means his POLITICS SUCK! HOWEVER - quite possibly for the first time, I agree 100% with the statement he made that I quoted - ie: council needed to "open the gates" to the private sector, providing services and land (not sure about that last word!) for them to grow their businesses instead of putting up barriers." It is generally supporting the private sector, which takes the risk. We don't take the risk, THEY take the risk. This is one of the VERY RARE times I will agree with any of them - this statement is 100% correct, and they should ALL have worked it out long ago. I have absolutely no affiliations with him or alternate motives - I simply stated he is a nice bloke, and I take people as I find them, and I think I am a good judge of character! - At least Stuart has never been rude or abrupt to me which is more than I can say for somebody else. Perhaps you should have a go at tackling the issues instead of the

IT’S LIKE A WASTING DISEASE – TCC STYLE

Posted on 14-10-2010 13:27 | By Ratcatcher

The gullible Tauranga voters or the 43% of the 80,350 eligible voters who without thinking, have just sold us out to the ‘snake oil' merchants, rather than support people who were qualified to make a meaningful change. Going with the floating butterflies, when Tauranga needed to be stung in action by the bees means all the following crap and much more will now continue unabated: - TCC Rates increasing over next 2 years - at least 30% predicted Ballooning TCC debt approaching $400 million An out of control Council bureaucracy Increasing Council Staff numbers = 500 + Increasing TCC wage bill, nudging $40 million Southern Pipeline - $250 million (more like ½ Billion dollars by 2015) Amalgamation of Councils State of the Art Museum - $20 million TISEC $45 million and escalating Baypark Stadium - huge annual losses City Aquatics - huge annual losses City Partners - a mutual admiration society Eastern Arterial nonsense SmartGrowth clobbering machine Waterfront redevelopment - $30 million plus MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH TCC Lack of financial nous No accountability No transparency No honesty with ratepayers Enjoy the moment while you can, once the euphoria wears off, everyone will experience the harm you as voters have done to Tauranga and its inhabitants. Crosby received 21% of the total of those eligible to vote as opposed to those that did vote - in other words, 79% didn't support him and as for his wish list of candidates provided by Ms. Pankhurst that fared even worse, averaging out at around 15%. i.e., 85% of the Electorate didn't give them their support either by voting against them or not voting at all.

With a 21% voter approval the Mayor will pounce back into 'carry on as usual” mode …. That means we all pay dearly voter or not. Look out for next years rate bill at 20%+ increase followed by 20-25% each year after that until 2016. ENJOY !

Brilleaux, what pills are you on, they must have something to do with plug the cables back into the telephone switch board? Mayor Crosby has been trying but failed to run a cohesive outfit for some six years, look at what you have got for it. You have missed the facts, the truth and of course how it is. I forgive you and the other 16999 voters who also ticked the wrong box, they also must have thought that the tick meant 'I want more more more rates, yes please …”

@ The Master: I am on those white pills with the blue stripe - you know the ones! (I never take the red ones) I don't believe you have understood what I have said. First of all - I did NOT vote for Crosby. I refuse to vote for the better of 2 evils. I refuse to make a choice between a punch on the nose or a poke in the eye - I want NEITHER, and REFUSE to give them my permission to do either. and at the risk of REPEATING MYSELF - I simply stated that what he was quoted as saying was BRILLIANT (about getting private enterprise to do stuff) Have a look at my original post - It even SAYS I dont like the way he does business

BRILLEAUUX

Posted on 21-10-2010 10:16 | By The Master

In the movie the red ones take you to the truth, the blue one lets you stay in the "DREAM LAND" and so remain as fooder for the cannon as it were. Of course that means remaining completely oblivious to what is really going on ... explains a lot doesn't it!

COHESIVE COUNCIL PROMISED

Yes for sure if there are 10 x David Stewarts who "give" there vote on an unquestioned basis to teh mayor for three years to get the deputy job.

THINGS AIN'T WOT THEY SEEM

Posted on 21-10-2010 12:22 | By CONDOR

One would find it very hard unless one had a split personality to have a different persona politically than in private life or in business. Basically if you are two-faced in one aspect of your life you retain the inherent trait of being two-faced in all the other aspects even though you may try to disguise it. On the topic of the glories of private enterprise in business that is a good thing if it starts off life in the private sector but if it starts off life as in Government sector and is then privatised then as far as consumers are concerned it will be a failure because they will be severely dealt to . The prime illustrations of this are Telecommunications,The Govt. Printing Office, AIR NZ ,Power Companies, BNZ and NZ RAIL .The current clamour for privatised water would be a disaster. As for private businesses that are purchased or acquired by Councils why did TCC purchase Baypark Stadium from Clarkson for $12million and CGAF Limited the building inspection company for $400k ??? And try to run City Aquatics as the end results are just as bad

WATER QUAGMIRE

Posted on 21-10-2010 13:31 | By The Master

PRIVATISE WATER WILL END UP LIKE AUCKLAND, EXPENSIVE TO CONSUMERS. If Council sells off all the essentials, then all they will have to think about are luxuries, like they have to much free time now going on the last three years of "proven leadership" and indulgence on Libraries, Baypark, Art gallery, TISEC, Mt Greens and more. They have lined up even more to come: museums, Strand development, Historic Village, wack the near new cossie club ... when will a little common sense sneek back in!

Creative little varmits

Posted on 21-10-2010 15:44 | By ROCKY

The Master ; Come on mate I doubt if many of them can spell cohesive let alone act out the game. The right hand wouldn't know what the left is doing most of the time.Wasting money is an art form to them & the only 'private' enterprise they know about is how to keep things a secret from the public.

ITS ALL A GAME ROCKY

Posted on 23-10-2010 11:07 | By The Master

They know how to act out the game for sure, the game they play is not always good for anyone else of course. The "left hand" is in the councillor lounge" and the "right hand" is in the "council chamber" where they should be voting with a free mind, at least that is what the oath they all take at the beginning of the elected term says.
