Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby is to lead the city for the next three years after winning the election in emphatic fashion.
The progress results came in at about 2.30pm and show Stuart with 16,586 votes. The next best was Murray Guy with 4285 votes.
Mayor Stuart Crosby celebrating with his wife Lesley after winning a landslide victory in the Tauranga City Council election today.
The preliminary results are due on Sunday and the final results during the week, but the progress results show well enough that Stuart is the winner.
Stuart campaigned on a platform of ‘proven leadership', and this vote for him indicates a public approval for his previous term.
Throughout the campaign, Stuart talked about the strategies he had in place for meeting the city's problems and how to best lead the city through a time of substantial growth.
His strategies have required significant rates increases with ratepayers copping a 17 per cent rates increase over the next three years.
The city is also bearing a significant debt burden to pay for this growth and for its 2010 draft annual plan Audit New Zealand damned it as unsustainable.
This plan was revised and passed by Audit New Zealand that also recently gave Tauranga City Council its blessing with an ‘excellence' in financial reporting systems.
These policies of debt and reasonably high rates increases appear to have found acceptance by the public through this vote for Stuart to make him mayor again.
The voter turnout was not high. With 25 minutes left before the ballot closed at midday on Saturday, 42.28 per cent of the electorate had voted. This equates to 33,973 voters.
In the 2007 election 46.36 per cent of the electorate voted.
The council will be:
Mayor: Stuart Crosby
At large
Tony Christiansen
Rick Curach
Bill Faulkner
Murray Guy
Mount Maunganui-Papamoa
David Stewart
Wayne Moultrie
Otumoetai-Pyes Pa
Catherine Stewart
Larry Baldock

Bill Grainger

SHAME SHAME SHAME

Shame on the people that did not vote, and the number of blank returns is disgusting. "The only day of democracy is the day of voting", and now you have thrown that right away. The consequence is to push Tauranga to its limits in the name of growth, more debt and more rate rises. Its criminal that the people who did not vote, in part force the rest of us to suffer more of the same practice of wasting the tax payers money.....SHAME SHAME SHAME
Time for Elected Members to Take Control

Congratulations to the elected Mayor and Councillors, remember you have been elected in by the people of Tauranga so never be afraid to listen to what they say. More importantly you control the workers and the CEO is responsible to you for us. it felt in the past previous Councils were the puppet for the CEO time to assert your rights which are our rights.

Tauranga ratepayers deserve what they get. Another 3 years of high rate increases. Unless of course the two new councillors don't vote with Crosby's "rat pack". At least Baker has gone which is a massive plus.
Unbelievable !!!
Posted on 09-10-2010 17:35 | By Jitter
Why do people vote for Crosby ? Can't they see through him ? I must admit the other candidates were'nt much chop but neither is he. However all Crosby and his cronies want to do is spend, spend, spend and to hell with what it costs ratepayers and the consequenses. It all comes back to people's "ability to pay", if people don't have that then we are all stuffed.
Clear Mandate
Posted on 09-10-2010 17:44 | By Jitter
No - Crosby does not have a clear mandate. He still must consult the ratepayers. However over the past 3 years Council have made decisions not based on the majority of public submissions. The Mount Hot pools is a case in point when council chose a more expensive option to that chosen by the majority of submitters. It is time for a Commissioner to be appointed to run TCC honestly and fairly. Hopefully the new CEO will be an honest individual and do as they are told.
I disagree kiaora

I disagree Kiaora When you have a choice between the best of 2 evils what you get is STILL EVIL. What kind of option is it when you get to chose between: A): A punch on the nose OR B): A poke in the eye To give your permission to people who TELL YOU they are going to do things you disagree with is STUPID - not clever People who give their permission to people to do things they disagree with are the ones who should be berated. They are also the ones who, when they get what they demand, MOAN about it. Shame Shame Shame. As long as the biggest GANG get to vote away the rights of the minority you will have this problem.
it will be his last

Crosby has a habit of hiding behind his soldiers and pulling the puppet strings to manipulate matters Baypark is a classic his new puppet has been there 9 months now and all he has achieved is to spend money and bow down to Bob Clarkson and the demands he made in Jan this year. What has Bob got that you are so afraid of mayor It will come out and people will see you in the true light of day
was that a tsunami warning?

I heard some sirens going yesterday at the Mt at approximately 1.40pm, I was immediately alarmed as the business owner started shutting up shop and putting up closing down sale signs. I enquired what he was doing, and what the sirens were about, and he replied, 'havent you heard, its the Crosby has been re-elected siren, its time to evacuate while we can'. Crsoby and the 'ratpack' has done a great job over the past 3 years of destroying small businesses in the city, and he says that this is 'proven leadership'?!?!?! The only people that will benefit from the re-election of Crosby and Co, will be the Real Estate firms, with the vast amount of people leaving Tauranga as it is no longer financially viable for the average person to live there. Maybe I should get my Real Estate papers?
People just dont think!
Posted on 10-10-2010 13:59 | By bringa
The reason y most ppl voted for the same ppl is coz they dont know anyting about anyone else and think oh yeh thay doing an alright job so they can get my vote again! Every candidate needs to be on the same playing field and be able to get thier message out to the ppl that dont know them otherwise ppl just wont vote for them
Not again

Wow, what a let down. Tauranga has floundered for too long now, it's time for some new blood to get things up and running. Everything Mayor Crosby and his council has done has been 5 years too late and ill-advised resulting in ratepayers copping the cost. And now rates increases of 17%, get real!!!
Good Question
Posted on 12-10-2010 09:05 | By cag16
I have to ask the same question as Shocked 1 (10-10-2010) What is the missing piece that will explain it all???
Dysfunctional Council
Posted on 12-10-2010 19:24 | By waiknot
Crosby has been mayor for 2 terms, we have had a dysfunctional council for 2 terms. And only now does Crosby plan to work on getting some unity into council!!! Man is Crosby sharp but 2 terms to late. Look in the mirror Stuart work on your self then we may get unity. you are elected Mayor not the dictator.
