Zespri is offering scholarships worth $3000 each to secondary school students choosing to study horticulture or a related field at a New Zealand tertiary institute.
Applications for the 2010/11 Zespri Horticulture Scholarships Programme close at 5pm on Friday, October 15.
The scholarships will be offered at the end of the 2010 year, for study in 2011. Each scholarship is for one year only.
One of the successful 2010 scholarship recipients, Lisa Arnold, is studying a Bachelor of Science and is yet to decide on a major in either cell and molecular bioscience or ecology and biodiversity.
"Biology is fascinating and I am particularly enjoying learning about plants, my main passion," says Lisa.
"The Zespri scholarship has helped immensely with my finances - there is so much to pay for at uni."
In addition to the cash toward fees, scholarship students also visit Zespri to learn about marketing and operations before heading out to an orchard and plant and food research. This gives the students a snapshot look at the kiwifruit industry and the different roles that are available to them when their studies are completed.
