MP heads to Japan

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges aims to strengthen New Zealand's relationship with Japan while he is there for a week long visit sponsored by the Japanese government.
He arrived on Friday and has a busy schedule of engagements with Japanese officials until he leaves on Saturday.

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges is in Japan.

Simon's programme includes visiting large Japanese businesses and business leaders, learning about Japan's court system, visiting courts, justice facilities, visiting Japan's Parliament, and holding meetings with Japanese MPs.
"The Japanese-New Zealand relationship is a very important and longstanding one and I am grateful that I am going to be able to learn more about it and deepen relations between our countries", says Simon.
"I am sure there will be things I learn in Japan that will be of direct application in New Zealand."

Sponsored by Japan Govt?

While its good to see that this tour will not directly be paid by our taxpayers, will there be a reverse trip of Japanese MPs paid for by our taxpayers? Given the public reaction against MPs and their travel, be aware of the possibility that cleverer minds than ours will come up with ways for MPs and their parties to still travel. If the taxpayer ends up funding Japanese MPs in a reciprocal trip, then I object to a subterfuge. If this is a truly "free" tour, then I have no problems with it.
