Your thoughts on painting shops

Artworks and displays may become the norm in Tauranga CBD as part of a revitalisation shake-up.

The idea is to replace for lease signs with vibrant window artwork and displays with Mainstreet Tauranga set to approach commercial property landlords with the initiative in a bid to transform empty shop fronts – enticing potential tenants in the process.

Mainstreet Tauranga co-ordinator Sally Cooke says the project, still in its infancy, will look to encourage landlords to ‘lease' their shop windows to businesses and retailers so they could mount attractive displays.

Artworks like these are being proposed for the Tauranga CBD.

Not a Great Idea!

A shop-keeper doesn't pull down a blind in his window to stop people seeing what is for sale within. The same principal applies here. A prospective leasee needs to see what they are 'buying' before making further enquiries into leasing. I guess it should be up to the each individual property owner as to whether they want to paint a 'blind' over their shop frontage. Christchurch is awesome with its art, and paintings everywhere - but that is a different scenario.

Not really!

Great to see some city walls being covered by awesome art work - but not the shop fronts! It only emphasizes the fact they are empty and look doomed to remain that way!
