UPDATED 7AM: The government's submission on the resource consent application to leave the Rena wreck on Astrolabe Reef will be filed today – along with an expected flood of last minute submissions.
'We want to be able to release the final submission at the same time we announce the Crown's general position,” says a spokesman for Attorney General Chris Finlayson's office today.
The Attorney General is expected be available for press interviews on the submission at Parliament at 9am.
Because of the complexity and technicality of the issues and the fact the Rena owners and insurers' consent application itself comprises several volumes of data, regional council staff are expecting submitters to make full use of all the time they have available before Friday's 5pm deadline.
Daina Shipping and The Swedish Club are applying for resource consent to leave the remainder of the wreck of the Rena on the Astrolabe Reef.
The former containership struck the reef on October 5, 2011, subsequently breaking up and spilling fuel oil and cargo into the Bay of Plenty. Much of it washed ashore on local beaches in what became the region's largest environmental disaster.
After submissions close the applicant Daina Shipping and The Swedish Club, has five working days to file for a direct referral of the resource consent application to the Environment court.
The applicant previously stated it will take this action to fasttrack the process. Within 15 days of that filing, the regional council must make a decision on the referral process.
The submitters must be notified and a report prepared. The earliest the Notice of Motion and an affidavit can be filed with the Environment Court is October 17.

keeps mounting, make a bloody decision and get on with it, you could build 5 x new hospitals, employ and pay more for health professionals, have most schools (that need them) supplied with notebooks, and the list goes on!!!!!
gutless government

typical of a gutless government, take the money and put your head in the sand instead of standing up for what the people want........... get rid of that mess, no matter the cost !!

as usual you are ringing your own, I really do not care who makes the decision, all I would like to see is one actually made, so taxpayers money can go into something of benefit to the Country, and do not start with any "Tribunal" rhetoric, my comments where made without any overtones, so Robin get your head out of the trough and stop only thinking of yourself.
who cares

I think we should take $100 from each rate payer to fix the Rena mess. Even if we have to increase rates by 20%, us pensioners hate seeing a mess at the beach.
