Face painting, fire truck rides and go karting are some of the fun-filled activities children are enjoying at Arataki Community Centre today.

Organised by Nga PotikiaTamapahore Trust, Tamariki Day is offering a full day of fun for children aged 2-6 as part of Matariki.
Co-organiser Colin Reeder says Tamariki Day is an essential part of the trust's educational strategy to raise educational achievement amongst Maori communities by identifying non participation in early childhood education.
"However, the Trust was delighted to provide an event that appealed to the wider non Maori community to highlight the importance of early childhood learning as a foundation for life long learning.
"All children should have access to quality early childhood learning as of right."
While the overall goal of the event was to celebrate pre-schoolers, their older siblings and adults clearly enjoyed themselves on the day as well, says Colin.
"The event also sought to provide an opportunity for early childhood learning providers to profile themselves at a single site and to inform parents and caregivers what services are available."
Colin says the event also sought to promote positive race relations and strengthen a sense of community.

Carnival rides, games and colouring competitions are available, as well as face painting and storytelling. Tauranga Fire Brigade is offering free fire truck rides and Mai FM is there to add to the excitement.
Colin says there are a number of early childhood education providers at the event as well so parents and grandparents have the opportunity to learn about what's available to them and their young ones.
'There is something for everyone”.
Colin wants to thank the people of Arataki and surrounding communities, and all of those organisations including the Ministry of Education that participated or provided support which helped make Tamariki Day a resounding success.
Tamariki Day is at Arataki Community Centre until 2pm today.

How long before it becomes so important that it is a "public holiday". Tamariki has only become fashionable in the last 12yrs that I can remember.

Sorry I meant Matariki. Tamariki Day is good to be recognised.
