A political party front lined by Tauranga Independent MP Brendan Horan and promising to serve the voter instead of big business and sector interests is preparing for the national elections on September 20.
Started by Brendan, the NZ Independent Coalition has submitted its membership list to the Electoral Commission, and today put out its first national press release.
Tauranga Independent MP Brendan Horan.
Numerous bills born out of current New Zealand party politics have failed referendum support yet have passed through Parliament by Party vote, says NZ Independent Coalition party chairperson Michael O'Neill.
NZ Independent Coalition offers NZ voters something new, a challenge to the status quo, says Michael.
'It's not Brendan Horan's party. Brendan Horan is a member of the party,” says Michael.
'There are some other very capable people behind this party. It's not all about Brendan, and we don't want it to be all about Brendan. To call it Brendan Horan's party is quite inaccurate. He's a member of the party. He has been appointed the political leader of the party.”
The party is calling for candidates, yet there are several already demonstrating an interest, says Michael.
'The party is not fully registered yet although we are calling for candidates it will come out in time. And probably the local candidates will come out quicker than the others.”
Confirmation of the Party is expected within the next four weeks. The NZ Independent Coalition will announce policies and candidates following registration.
'New Zealanders who want better democracy and who no longer have faith in party politics will be attracted to our progressive polices.
'Together we can make our wonderful country better and the electorate can have their voice represented throughout the parliamentary term by being involved with their MP's vote.”
For voters elections have been a balancing act between party policies which are least damaging, says Michael. This has bred a climate of political distrust in MP's and negativity towards the political process.
Under the NZ Independent Coalition electorates will be constantly involved in directing coalition MP's vote, thereby giving ownership back to the people.
Registration as a political party means the NZ Independent Coalition will be eligible to contest the 2014 Election and be able to take its message of accountable governance to the people of New Zealand.

Brendan is NOT an "Independent" because not one single person voted for him. His insistance that he is an "independent" is an assault on democracy.

Once again you show your limited grasp of the democratic process.

Explain what is democratic about getting in as a list MP under one party and then leaving that party but staying in parliament. His "votes" were party votes for a party he is no longer with. Not one person voted for him. If he resigned and had a byelection he knew what would happen.
