Health career expo at hospital

The diversity of employment in the healthcare sector will be on display at a careers expo in Whakatane next week.

The Health Careers Expo 2014, at Whakatane Hospital on June 25 is for anyone interested in a career in healthcare, says Bay of Plenty District Health Board education manager Penny Horton.

A Health Careers Expo is happening at Whakatane Hospital on June 25.

'With 3000 employees and over 300 different roles, the BOPDHB is the Bay's biggest employer and also offers probably the biggest range of careers,” says Penny.

'We've already had a great response from some of the local schools. But anyone interested in a career in the health sector is encouraged to come along; from secondary school students through to adults changing their career paths.

'This event is open to everyone. We have nursing students today who are women in their 30-40s, who wanted a career change.”

Hospital staff from a range of disciplines will be present to discuss their day-to-day work and the training they undertook.

More than 15 health professionals will be available ranging from the traditional doctors and nurses, to health improvement officers and promoters, anaesthetic technicians, midwives and healthcare assistants, say Penny.

'They will talk to people about what they do, how they trained, how long it took to train, how much it cost, what it's like looking for a job and anything else people might like to know.”

The expo is running on Wednesday, June 25, from 1-3pm at the Clinical School Conference Room, Whakatane Hospital.
