Route K tolls: your thoughts?

Route K tolls are set to rise from July 1.

For cars, vans and light trucks tolls are going up from $1.50 to $2 and for trucks with a gross vehicle mass of over 3.5 tonnes it will rise from $1.50 to $5. Motorcycles will remain free of charge.

SunLive asked people what they think about the roll increase.

Ban the trucks form city streets

Just like Whakatane and Ohope Beach where trucks are banned from travelling through and have to go via Taneatua I think? Fair enough if the truckies don't want to pay tolls then let them go round the Maungatapu Maunganui Rd way instead. But keep heavy trucks off Cameron Rd juts like other towns do.

The most inane,

or the most insane way of solving an issue I have ever seen,is it a case of stupidity?, or do they think this will work?,I use Route K on average 20 times per week by car, from July 1, that becomes a dire need useage only, the maths are simple, but obviously not as simple as for the T.C.C to understand, cool back, to Cameron road, I shall pack a survival kit.

No choice

From day one the Route K project was flawed. The then council planed to charge tolls on the harbour bridge, so traffic volumes didn't matter. So they lied about them. End result it doesn't matter how you gift wrap it the debt exists and we ratepayers/road users will have to pay and keep on paying.

NO BRAINER

If you keep prices at a low, more people will use the highway. Each time the price goes up the numbers drop, an elementary dear Watson phrase. I will use but sparingly as it saves time, but if have other things to do will by pass. Robson and his advice to saving money seems to have faded and if this is how he made his money perhaps I can now understand his need to go onto council 3 years he reckons he can support living well 3 years he might have to turn the lights out on a city of doom, well perhaps not but logic says get high usage people use. Cost 87 cents on an MRT (Train) here in Singapore for a 15 minute ride. A ten minute taxi ride $5. A taxi from the Airport to near the middle of Singapore around $20. Taxis busy.

Simple Really ..

I'm not sure on anyone else's thoughts but its pretty simple .. instead of putting the price up, why don't they either A/put drop-boxes like they use to have on the old bridge or B/use a registration plate recognition system that sends out a bill once a month? By using either they would save on wages/salaries, therefore not needing to increase the cost. An increased cost that people won't pay and will therefore take an alternative route, leading to a loose/loose situation for all.

How much more in gas does it cost to boycott it, Im guessing its a false economy. User pays fair enough.

Making bad thing worse

I am a regular user of route K twice daily but am now going to go via Cambridge Rd. There is a limit on what I will pay for the convieniance. They are cutting there own throughts, I thought they wanted to attract more users, how can they be so stupid. Also it needs more access to be better utilised, on ramp from Judea or 15th ave south

toll road

The people in this video clip not realizing that they may not use toll road personally but the trucks that bring supplies to our supermarkets do have to use it and if they have to pay more to get supplies here then they will pass on increase to customer which will then see increase in retail prices.

Bang on, Maccachic

Using Cambridge road will cost you about an extra 25 cents total running costs, and take about 90 seconds longer. In other words, using Route K will cost you $1.75 to save 90 seconds

Sale PRICE

Posted on 18-06-2014 15:35 | By Milo48

Is this the cost of Route Ks sale to the Government roading system. Or is it just a big exchange, with the poor motorist paying again. Smells of a Simon Bridges double cross here. time to come clean and admit the rise is the final cost of the Govt buyout????

More would use it

More motorists would use Route K if it had more off/on ramps ie Historic Village, Greerton and Cambridge Rd That way it would move the traffic faster, disperse traffic from the city faster up thru the valleys off Route K and free up congestion in rush hours on Cameron Road. Yes they would have to move the toll gates, but atleast Route K would then be useful to Tauranga residents and not just the trucks travelling over the Kaimai's.

Too expensive

Too expensive as it is. I think that if they put it up people would stop using it and then council would begin to loose money as a result. I certainly wont be using it after the price hike.
