Western Bay power outages

UPDATE 3PM: Papamoa and Te Puke residents still without power are expected to have it reinstated by this evening.

Most customers lost power during yesterday's high winds causing wide-spread power cuts in Tauranga, South Waikato and Coromandel.

Powerco is reporting a pair of power outages still remain across the Western Bay of Plenty.

The outages and faults register shows power is out in Papamoa and Te Puke.

It reports power went out in Papamoa at 3.14pm on Wednesday and is due to be restored at 6pm today.

Te Puke is registering the same as Papamoa with power due to be restored at 6pm.

Powerco acting network operations manager Dean Stevenson says field crews have already restored power to about 28,000 customers.

Good progress is being made in challenging conditions to restore the remaining 2000 customers, with most expected to have electricity by tonight.

He says field crews were having trouble accessing some areas to repair faults due to road closures, flooding and storm debris.

As well as repairing current faults, crews were on alert, with further high winds expected for the northern Bay of Plenty and Coromandel areas between 8pm and midnight tonight.

Extra field crews are being brought into the affected areas to help restore supply as quickly and safety as possible.

Dean says most of the damage had been caused by trees falling across lines.

'These power cuts could have been avoided if the trees had been trimmed or felled to avoid problems.”
