Matua focus of flood works

The majority of the $3.4million today approved as part of a $5million ratepayer funded levy to fix stormwater problems around the city will be spent in the suburb of Matua.

Tauranga City Council today approved a ratepayer funded levy towards providing an additional $5million to address flood issues.

The work could include land purchases of flood affected homes and areas needed to move forward with stormwater works, reports TCC.

'Following today's Council meeting, confidential negotiations have started on potential property purchases where land is needed for the proposed stormwater projects,” says TCC in a media statement.

The stormwater levy adds 4.7 percent to the rates requirement and is a response to flooding seen across the city this April.

TCC advises the levy will complement the existing $5.5m that is already allocated in the 2014/15 Annual Plan for stormwater improvement works in the Mount Industrial area.

The new stormwater levy spent in the 2014/15 year is made up of $1.2m for stormwater modelling and other work to better understand stormwater issues across the city.

A total of $400,000 will go to the Mount Industrial Project already underway.

The largest chunk of $3.4m will towards stormwater improvement projects on the city's flooding ‘hotspots'.

The majority of this amount will be invested in the Matua peninsula, says TCC.

'It will enable preparatory work, including potential land purchases where needed, to move stormwater improvements forward in the two most flood-prone areas of Matua that have been identified from the modelling project and supported by complaints following flood events.”

Remaining funds will help with ongoing minor stormwater improvement work like catchpit upgrades across the city.

Greerton library budget $3.45m. Majority of the $3.4million approved today will be spent in the suburb of Matua. Don't live in Greerton or Matua, still going to get whacked in the pocket. What is wrong with you, councillors? Something blatantly wrong here.

No, SUMS Not All Wrong Nerak

I'm sorry Nerak, that you feel like that. I don't live in Greerton, nor Matua..... However, I do live in a community - just as you do. That's the concept of community management and growth..... With elected officials and the best professional advice for them to act upon, Decisions do get made that benefit the whole community...OR..... Those places who most need the management, maintenance, or development. You cannot have a narrow personal focus when you live in a large and diverse community. If you're a ratepayer, you have signed-up to that concept. Surely you can see that we don't all get the sweets every time they're thrown? Perhaps even be thankful you don't have a flooding crisis to deal with, on this scale. I cannot apologise for putting this to you, but surely you can also see that your community IS suffering. It's difficult, but let's all getin behin

Strange Priorities

Ten million dollars of extra debt subsiding a boat travel lift? And this is when the industry said, let us develop and invest in our needs! Ten Million dollars buys a lot of flood mitigation works!

Yep!!!

here we go again......, Matua is only part of the issue, remedy the entire cities storm water problems, not a few, for to many years these concerns have been flushed away, only for another "once in a 100 year" flood to occur, fix the complete issue NOW!!!!.

Oh yes

Oh yes, I live in a community, of ratepayers getting bled dry by a council out of control, with no handle on the realities this city needs, not wants. My point is, what is more necessary, a library or stormwater upgrade. I don't apologise for not wanting to pay for one of those. As a ratepayer, I have not ‘signed up' to the concept of empire building, on any level. There are a few intelligent councillors whose professional advice is not being heard, from what I understand; it's high time all of them worked together to get matters sorted out to the benefit of the whole community, not just a self interested few. I don't live in Papamoa either. Sadly, we will see more empire building, before at least one on council steps down at the end of this term. Names in lights don't build good cities. Nor do marine precincts..

Murray Guy and his previous Council

Interesting to see Murray Guy's comments about $10 million being put into the marine area, though isn't it actually $5 million from TCC? What about the $5 million "injection" into Baypark and the purchase of a Speedway and catering business when he was a councillor??? I'm still waiting for an answer on which way he voted as a councillor on each of those issues. For or against? Because that would have bought a lot of flood mitigation works too, eh?
