Fire and Emergency New Zealand is urging people planning to let off fireworks this Guy Fawkes to prioritise safety.
The warning comes amid dry conditions and windy weather that can quickly turn celebrations into emergencies.
Acting National Manager Community Readiness and Recovery Tom Ronaldson said in a statement that people should check local conditions before lighting fireworks and avoid using them when it is windy.
“Several large fires in recent weeks have already shown how easily fires can start and spread in windy conditions.”
Over the past decade, Fire and Emergency has attended an average of 160 firework-related fires each year, with numbers increasing over the past two years.
He said parts of New Zealand were already experiencing warm and dry conditions associated with El Niño weather patterns, making it especially important for people to act responsibly.
“If you choose to light fireworks, it’s your responsibility to light them safely and make sure they don’t cause a fire,” Ronaldson said.
Fire and Emergency is encouraging people to check weather conditions and any fire restrictions in their area through the Check It’s Alright website before using fireworks. Some regions already have fire restrictions in place.
The agency is also advising people to keep water or a hose nearby, ensure fireworks are directed safely into the sky and away from vegetation and buildings, and avoid setting them off in public areas where bans may apply.
People are also encouraged to notify neighbours before using fireworks, particularly those with pets or livestock, and to soak spent fireworks in water before disposing of them.
Fire and Emergency says taking a few simple precautions can help prevent fires and keep communities safe during Guy Fawkes celebrations.
