Bay of Plenty Labour MP Steve Chadwick is slamming the government's 2010 Budget, saying 40 per cent of Tauranga residents will "go backwards" as a result.
Major announcements in last week's Budget included across the board tax cuts, a rise in GST to 15 per cent and property tax reforms.
Steve says one third of tax cuts will go to five per cent of New Zealand's top earners.
"The people in Tauranga who sit in the middle and lower income brackets - around 40 per cent of all earners who live here - will go backwards.
"For instance, a family with two young kids end up $55 per week worse off after GST, inflation and ECE charges? are all taken into account."
She says the Budget does nothing for the future to create jobs or invest in skills and education.
