Citizens Advocacy Tauranga is suggesting central government funded district commissions be set-up to resolve the leaky homes "crisis".
CAT chairman Leo Mangos says it is time for central government to take ownership of this problem and his organisation has made a submission that says as much.
"This is a national problem, requiring a national solution," says Leo.
CAT chairman Leo Mangos.
"CAT is firmly of the view that responsibility for resolving the leaky homes problem lies with the government, particularly as home owners are the most innocent party in this debacle."
CAT's proposal suggests these commissions would work with stakeholders in panels to investigate the leaky building problem regionally and then make recommendations to government.
The commissions would have these statutory powers:
- Apply the "no-blame" principle, similar to that exercised by the ACC.
- Allocate funds to facilitate repairs.
- To retain independent and impartial experts to provide sound decision making.
