Building better search engines

Tauranga man Ross Bendall is looking for investors to make his internet search engine called Kissit2 a success.
The point of difference for the December 2008 launched Kissit2 is the very thing that started him on the search in the first place – the fact in English there are many words with the same spelling but different meanings.

Ross Bendall.

The major search engines do not recognise this, frustrating many internet searches. It was that frustration that started Ross off on the search for a better way.
He says he began looking for a better mouse trap after unsuccessfully searching on the internet for a gold rose.
'I went looking for a gold rose,” says Ross. 'It's a real rose dipped in 24 carat gold. I found everything else on the internet but I didn't find what I was looking for.”
Computer search engines work in binary code. When a word is reduced to binary the computer search seeks to match the binary code with identical bits of binary code.
'It can't tell them apart,” says Ross.
'Computers don't know what all the words are about – they have to be told every step of the way. You can't ask a computer to get a proper answer.”
His solution is to number as many different meanings of each word as possible in the search engine dictionary so meanings can be selected at the beginning of any search.
'The word star has 10 or 12 different meanings, gold has nine or 10 different meanings and you cannot actually find what you are looking for on many search engines,” says Ross.
Ross has a few investors, but he's operating on a shoestring compared with the budgets of the big players. One company invested $100 million in a search engine intended to take over from Google.
'It followed the Google format and everyone had a look, and switched back to Google,” says Ross.
There are 2700 English character search engines on the web, says Ross.
'I'm looking for investors at the moment just to push it along a little bit faster.”
