Papamoa Primary School Year 5 and 6 team are winners of the Comvita Top School 2014 competition at Paengaroa School.

Papamoa Primary School sports co-ordinator Hamish Avery says this is the first time in the school's history they have won.

'This is a fantastic achievement in a fiercely contested competition and our team were a credit to their families and school.

'A large part of our success on Sunday was due to the planning, hard work and preparation led by the teams' coaches Jarrod McKeown and Jennie Abbott.”

The junior team included Grady Forbes, Harrison Leach, Kahu Ross, Zak Mason, Liam Davoren, Cameron Gaualofa, Eden Kelly, Molly Mckeown, Olivia Carr-Manoit, Casey McManaway, Rylee Bell, and Elmae Steenkamp.

They will be presented with the shield at Friday's assembly.

The Top School competition invites primary schools to enter a team of 12 to compete in fun activities, including the ‘Leaky Bucket' game, where students take turns to slide down a slippery slide while at the same time trying not to lose any water from a leaking bucket. Other games include the magic carpet ride, big foot and the horizontal bungy.

Teams can also compete in a cheerleading competition, which was won by Golden Sands School's Year 5 and 6 team and Otamarakau School's Year 7 and 8 team.

Gate Pa School also hosted a top school event on Sunday.
