Parent dislocates hip on trek

UPDATED 1.20PM: A parent helper who dislocated her hip after falling off a bush track near Te Puke has been airlifted to Tauranga Hospital.

Emergency services were called to Demeter Rd near Te Puke at about 8.34am after the woman fell while walking towards the Otanewainuku track.

The woman was one of 19 trampers, including parents and children, on a Tauranga Rudolf Steiner school camp in the area.

Tauranga Rudolf Steiner school board of trustees chairman Stephen Lane says parents of the children have been notified and the incident will not affect the continuation of the school's Odyssey, which is an annual event for senior pupils involving hiking, an overnight bush stay, kayaking and a night-stay at a marae.

The school party itself has moved on from the situation, says Stephen.

'She fell and injured her hip and she was well looked after by staff that were there and also the children that were around.”

The party of 19 stayed in the bush near Otanewainuku last night and were hiking towards Waitangi this morning when the woman, accompanying the party as a teacher support person, slipped and is believed to have dislocated her hip.

'I think she dislocated her hip, that's what I have heard. [But] That's not 100 per cent confirmed,” says Stephen.

With the woman airlifted to Tauranga Hospital, the odyssey is continuing on, says Stephen.

'All the children are safe and fine; and the injured woman is replaced with another adult experienced with school camps.

'All of the parents have been informed.”

The group is staying on a marae near the Kaituna Cut tonight and finish their camp tomorrow after they walk along the beach to be transported to Welcome Bay.

'They are not little children and they are very capable,” says Stephen. 'This is just an unfortunate tramping accident.”

A police statement says police and ambulance were dispatched and by noon rescuers had reached the injured party on foot to extract the woman by rescue helicopter.
