Tauranga Grey Power member Doug Wilson is just about at the end of his tether after fielding hundreds of calls over the past few weeks from people complaining about the government's proposed plans to raise GST to 15 per cent.
As Grey Power's events and entertainment coordinator at the organisation's headquarters at the Historic Village, Doug is responsible for answering calls from members and the public.
Doug Wilson has been inundated with people complaining about a possible GST rise.
For the past few weeks Doug has received dozens of calls every day from people concerned about the proposed GST rise.
"They're not just Grey Power members. It's people from all walks of life."
He believes there is strong concern in the Tauranga community regarding a possible GST rise and is urging people to take action.
"What annoys me is the bellyaching. But are they willing to take their concerns to the streets?"
Doug is organising a silent march against a GST rise on Saturday, April 10.
He is urging all of those concerned about GST to participate in the march, which will start at Memorial Park and finish at the Masonic Park.
"This is the time the public should join together as a family unit."

Do the maths!

Once again people with political agendas are trying to stir up worry and concern amongst vulnerable people where there should be none. This is the maths: Single super: $576.12 per fortnight. Fortnightly rent is say $300 That means that there is $276.12 left. If all this is spent then GST paid by this person at 12.5% is $34.51 a fortnight. At 15% GST this rises to $$41.42, an increase of $6.91 Because the super rate is going up by 2.5% super will increase by $14.40 -more than twice the amount of extra GST. On the other hand everyone will be paying an extra 4 cents per litre for petrol and power prices will increase because of the Emissions Trading Scheme that Helen Clark and Winston Peters imposed on New Zealanders. And there is no corresponding increase in super for these rises in costs.

Anyone with any savings will have 2.5% wiped out by the GST increase. So much for no extra taxes. I guess it will go on the rates too.
