Bridges refutes Rena promise

The Labour Party's promise to remove the Rena wreck from Astrolabe Reef is nothing more than 'empty promises by out of town politicians”, says Tauranga MP Simon Bridges.

Labour leader David Cunliffe yesterday announced that if elected, a Labour Government will make sure the ship's owners Daina Shipping 'pay the full amount to clean up Astrolabe Reef.”

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges says Labour leader's David Cunliffe's claims are "empty promises".

The containership Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef, about 25km off the coast of Tauranga, on October 5, 2011. The ship leaked more than 350 tonnes of heavy fuel oil into the environment and broke up, spilling containers and cargo into the ocean, washing up on beaches across the Bay of Plenty.

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges says the decision to remove the remaining sunken aft section is not up to the Opposition leader, or any other politician, as it will be handled independently through the Environment Court.

'I think most Tauranga people agree, as do I, that if possible the Rena should be removed from the reef unless it's unsafe or would make things environmentally worse,” says Simon.

'But it should be an Environment Court judge and not a politician who decides that on all the facts.”

The owners are expected to lodge a resource consent application with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council to leave remains of the ship on the reef between the end of March and May, 2014.

Motiti Island hapu are continuing to fight to have their claim for full removal resolved this month. Ngai Te Hapu Incorporated Society lodged the Treaty claim under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 last May.

Ngai Te Hapu representative Buddy Mikaere says iwi are heartened by Labour's announcement as political calls for the wreck's removal continue to grow.

'It means that all the political parties, the Maori Party, NZ First, Labour and the Greens all support what we are trying to do,” says Buddy.

'It's just adding more to the pressure on the owners of the Rena to fully remove it.”

Simon says the status quo remains for full removal of the wreck unless deemed environmentally unsafe. He also dismisses claims the Government induced monetary opportunities to leave the wreck as total 'nonsense”.

And he believes these 'out of town” politicians have nothing more to offer the city by constantly bringing up the Rena in attempts of 'pointless posturing”.

'Winston Peters said the same thing when he was last here and they are both doing it because when they read the newspapers in Herne Bay all they think of when they think of Tauranga is this. It's what they bring up when they come here.”

How is Cunliffe going to deliver on that promise?

I'd say it would be very difficult. Simon is right, this is just politicking.

Bridges to Nowhere

This is an election year and Labour's promise to remove the wreck of the Rena may well have a lot to do with electioneering. One thing that stands out however is the simple reality that it takes an "out of town" politician to speak up for the good of this electorate.

any one got a spare spine?

Posted on 04-03-2014 13:26 | By s83cruiser

Cunliffe and Peter's may be posturing but at least they have spine enough to stand up and be counted. It's a damn shame our current MP is that firmly sitting on the fence and lacking the fortitude to do right by the people that (sadly) voted him in to represent TGA that he won't get in there and show some fight for the total removal of the Rena. He knows how TGA feels about it being left to rot but won't go in to bat for his constituents. If you can't, won't, don't want to do your job Mr Bridges then get the hell out and let someone in that will fight for the rights of the people of Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty. Job Position opening soon. MP for Tauranga. SPINE REQUIRED.

Every political party has and still does make empty promises Simon.

Simon doesn't support his leader

Hold on Simon - there is an "out of town politician" called John Key who yesterday was reported as saying most people don't want the Rena wreck removed as it will make a great dive site. Are you undermining your leader or haven't you communicated properly with him about what local people want?

Short term memory

Posted on 04-03-2014 14:12 | By yikes61

When the Rena hit and the politicians hit town with their PR spin, it was Nationals FB Brownlee who stated "we will remove the WHOLE ship, cargo an all". So councillorwatch, red, blue or in-between, the politicians are all 'politicking' and bridges should know, he is a master!

Leave It Alone

I agree that Cunliffe is just politicking. If Labour ever get into power they will very quickly change their minds over this and put it in the too hard basket. I don't like Bridges and usually do not agree with him but this time he is correct and the decision must be left to the Environment Court to decide. If Buddy Mikaere and his ilk are so keen to see the rest of the wreck removed then how about putting some of their taxpayer provided compensation and claim money towards it. I say leave the rest of the wreck where it is as a warning to other s.

At least that politician is standing up and being counted even though it amounts to nix As for Tauranga's POLIE he stands backwards.

s83cruiser, NO spine required by David Cunnliffe

Posted on 05-03-2014 12:33 | By Murray.Guy

s83cruiser suggests spine is required to express the opinion that the Rena should be removed, regardless of the cost and risk, environmentally and to persons involved, in totality! NO SPIN needed at all. It doesn't involve their money, any effort or risk on their part and reflects an opinion, likely, based on a false perception of community wide spread desire. The spine is going to be required by the person(s) tasked with making a determination through the Environment Court as a Commissioner, the appropriate vehicle, unbiased, detached and able to sift through the facts and the fiction, reality from the ridiculous - whoever it emanates from!

Leave it alone...

Why remove something that has become a great habitat for thousands of marine species? Who could see this vessel below 2 meters of water? What a waste of money, and further destroying our ( yes ours... all humans not just a couple of lazy people) habitat..madness... This should be a marine reserve....a fantastic opportunity...

Agree, Why try and fix what ain't broke ...

Think about it

Posted on 14-03-2014 13:00 | By Raewyn

Cant believe people wanting to leave it there. It is still holding contaminants in the hull and is likely to leek these for years! It would not be safe for Divers! The vast marine life has always been on this reef it was the best fishing spot in the Bay of Plenty

Radioactive Waste in Rena

Posted on 03-04-2014 10:21 | By Mary Faith

Owners propose to leave the wreck and many containers where they lie on the reef. They admit several containers hold "Harmful contaminants". These were listed on the manifest. There are a number of containers which the captain admitted at his trail - were not listed on the manifest. Rumours say they contain "Nuclear Waste" "ERMA, the Environmental Risk Management Authority have approved to routinely, through to 2014, tranship yellowcake stored in drums through the Ports of Auckland, Tauranga, Nelson and Napier from Australia en route to the United States and other nations." Yellowcake is a radioactive substance, which means merely standing close to yellowcake without protective clothing can cause organ damage. The level of damage, which includes cancer, depends on how much pure uranium there is in the yellowcake and how long you've been exposed to it. Ingesting or inhaling yellowcake dust is most serious form of exposure.
