The Bay's television viewers will be able to watch Prime TV on Freeview from Monday. The move brings the total number of channels to 13 available on the Freeview satellite and 12 on High Definition.
Flight of the Conchords is one of Prime TV's shows that will be available from tomorrow in Freeview digital.
The announcement is welcomed by the Government, says Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman.
'The Government is pleased a positive outcome has been achieved. However, it should be emphasised this was always a commercial decision for the parties involved to reach of their own accord.
'It's no secret that the Government has been keen to see Prime on Freeview. Earlier this year the Government convened a meeting between SKY, Freeview and Kordia to identify the barriers to getting Prime on Sky.
'Having Prime on Freeview adds considerable value to that platform – viewers will now be able to see Prime in digital quality on Freeview. It also benefits Prime, increasing their potential viewership. It's a win-win for all parties.
'Today's announcement is also significant given that it's likely to increase uptake of Freeview, driving New Zealand's overall transition towards digital switch over,” says Dr Coleman.
A final decision on the official switch over date will be made when digital television take-up reaches 75 per cent of households, or in 2012, whichever occurs first.
More than a quarter of a million homes have Freeview.
IT was created to provide consumer choice in digital TV access and this latest development means New Zealanders can choose to watch all national free-to-air channels in digital quality.
'All you need is a Freeview approved digital receiver and your existing TV and you can enjoy Prime's programmes in digital quality for free” says Freeview's General Manager Sam Irvine.
Current Prime viewers may also be able to take advantage of their UHF aerials which could provide them with access to the Freeview HD platform. All viewers need to do is to visit www.freeviewnz.tv to see if they are in a Freeview HD coverage area.
