Fresh-faced students are diving into their prospective studies after marking the start of their 2014 tertiary year at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic today.
About 600 students were welcomed, along with new staff, with a karanga by Hinerongo Walker followed by words of welcome from kaumatua Robert Te Pere at the Windermere campus.
New students and staff are welcomed into the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Windermere campus this morning.
While some students started courses two weeks ago, the majority began today, followed by the remaining students on March 3.
Among today's new faces were the students enrolled in the polytechnic's new Bachelor of Creative Industries.
Developed in consultation with industry, the new degree received a large amount of interest from students of all ages, says senior communications advisor Meg Jones.
Other courses proving popular this year are animal care, business studies, engineering, immigration, legal studies, marine studies, preparation for law enforcement and sport and fitness, she says.
SunLive was there this morning to capture the welcome ceremony.

A Maori welcome or Pohiri allows visitors to feel welcomed to the locals (in this case Polytechnic). This is for all nationalities to experience our culture - just as we would enjoy it if we were being welcomed in China, India etc. Kapai Polytech!
