Feds and EBOP call truce

The warring parties appear to have reached a truce over effluent non-compliance by dairy farmers in the Rotorua Lakes area.
Federated Farmers Rotorua/Taupo provincial president Neil Heather says the parties have had a meeting of minds.

The row erupted last week after Environment Bay of Plenty sent out a press release claiming they had found a non-compliance rate of nearly 50 per cent, of farms checked in the area.
Neil responded saying EBOP had been selective with their information and as a result had tarnished the image of farmers in the area unfairly.
More press releases followed until both sides got around a table yesterday with representatives of DairyNZ, Fonterra and AgResearch.
'It is a success for plain face-to-face talking and a ‘no surprises' policy,” says Neil, who was disappointed EBOP had released their material without first advising Federated Farmers they were going to do so.
'We all want to achieve the same goals, and I think we now have a win-win situation for all of us.”
Federated Farmers is holding a meeting tonight at the Presbyterian Hall in Ngongotaha to inform them about what was discussed at the Tuesday meeting and to discuss strategies for achieving improved levels of compliance.
