Horticulture New Zealand president and Western Bay of Plenty kiwifruit orchardist Andrew Fenton says the new research and development fund for kiwifruit is a smart move for the industry.
Commenting on the new $35 million research and development programme announced on Monday, Andrew says we grow the best kiwifruit in the world in New Zealand.
With this investment, New Zealand can take on the world, and leverage good returns for growers off an increasingly strong market position says Andrew.
As a country with high production costs, New Zealand needs to use science research and technology to find new products and find better ways to grow them.
"The key to the new research funding announced today is not to grow double the number of kiwifruit - the idea is to grow higher value fruit, and more of it, on the land we already have.”

Wake up Kiwi Growers

I fail to understand why kiwi growers in NZ fail to see what Zespri are doing. They continue to tell you how valuble the growers are and how much NZ needs to grow kiwi fruit. Why should the nation continue to grow a crop that does not produce any profit for the grower. Why does the grower continue to put up with the Zespri monopoly which allows them to pass the costs of all their mistakes back onto the growers. They keep saying that NZ kiwi fruit is thretand by countries like Chile and Italy, if the threat is so then why does Zespri continue to grow in these countries. Wake up NZ kiwi growers they are taking you for a ride and then when you say you cannot afford to grow any more Zespri will have there new suppliers allready owned by them and in place. All paid for by YOU FOOLS. At least Turners and Growers offers you a future.
