Kiwifruit loading records were reset on two ships at the Port of Tauranga this month.
Seatrade-operated reefer ship Hansa Lubeck was loaded in 16.5 hours instead of 24, using an eight pallet lifting cage.
A week later the Fresh Carriers Corporation-operated, Asian Brier, was loaded in 21.5 hours - a record load using two pallet cages.
The total 2009 kiwifruit crop has been picked and more than half has been shipped so far.
The record loadings are an outstanding effort by the whole community, says Ian Mearns, general manager of Tauranga Kiwifruit Logistics Limited, which coordinates the New Zealand ship loading operations.
'This is an outstanding effort by the whole industry - the growers, cool stores, transport companies, stevedores and Zespri,” says Ian.
He attributes the result to product availability, additional buffer store space at the Port of Tauranga and the stevedores' general performance.
'Everyone seems to be energised and motivated to be working harder than ever before, which is great to see,” says Ian.
'We really rolled-up our sleeves and worked together to get the job done. It is a good example of all parties, irrespective of which company you represent, working together with a common focus.”
Zespri Supply Chain general manager Sally Gardiner says streamlining some processes contributed to a smooth operation this season.
The final shipment of gold kiwifruit is expected to leave the Port of Tauranga in the first week of August. Shipping continues for green kiwifruit through to November, with the final shipment scheduled to depart the Port of Tauranga mid-November, bound for Asia.
