An Open Country Cheese Company's Waharoa plant worker has laid a complaint with police alleging he was assaulted at the factory. This is more drama for the factory that is in some trying times.
The company has been in an industrial dispute with workers at the plant for the last two weeks.
The workers went on strike last week over a collapsed employment negotiation and then on Friday night the company issued them with a six week lockout notice.
National secretary of the New Zealand Dairy Workers Union, James Ritchie, says one of his members has alleged he was assaulted by a member of the company management prior to the union issuing its strike notice.
'We weren't going to say anything about it, hoping the police would deal with it, but nothing seems to have happened.”
Matamata Police confirmed to SunLive that a complaint had been laid with them, but a spokesman said he could not comment as it was an ongoing investigation.
'It's of a very minor nature and we are dealing with it as a routine enquiry.”
Late last week there was more drama at the plant when an effluent spill into the Waitoa River was discovered. The company accused the striking workers of trying to sabotage the plant, but James Ritchie says that is just nonsense.
'Our workers couldn't get in there because the company had hired security guards. It is more than likely that the spill occurred because they were using untrained people in the plant. We are going to court on Friday because we believe their lockout notice is illegal.”
