1080 doco to screen in Tauranga

The Bay of Plenty branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association is holding a public screening of the documentary, Poisoning Paradise – Ecocide in New Zealand, which is about the effects of 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate).

The film is being shown at Baycourt on Thursday, September 24, and the doors open at 7pm. Entry is just $10 and copies of the DVD will be on sale on the night.
Shot in the drop zone of an aerial 1080 drop, the film includes some harrowing footage.
The whole question of using 1080 poison to eradicate pests such as possums and rabbits was reviewed by the Environmental Risk Management Agency in late 2007. At the time the agency decided, despite over 1400 submissions, many of which were opposed to the continuous use of the poison, that it could continue to be used in New Zealand. However, it was apparent ERMA had concerns about the safety of the poison as their decision called for additional controls on aerial applications. These included licensing all users, an extension of the notification requirements, and improved consultation with affected parties.
Poisoning Paradise was made by brothers Clyde and Steve Graf, who also made the earlier 1080 documentary A Shadow of Doubt a couple of years ago.
