Petition against spray

'New Zealand is one of the last countries still allowing this chemical and it's time we banned it,” says Joan Duncan, organiser of a petition against the use of hydrogen cyanamide.

The fallout from recent protest meetings held on hydrogen cyanamide, commonly referred to by the brand name HiCane, is drifting further than the protesters claim the spray does.
Joan is part of a group opposed to the use of the chemical commonly used on kiwifruit orchards.
Joan Duncan says they have had an incredible response already to the petition which they have only just begun circulating.
'I'd say that we have already had between 700 and 800 signatures and we are putting copies into a lot of retail shops in Tauranga, Te Puke and Papamoa.”
Tomorrow, supporters of the movement are taking the petition along to the Farmers' Market at Papamoa where they hope to gather many more signatures.
'We are also looking for people to help us distribute the petitions,” says Joan.
'We also encourage children to sign this petition because it is often children that are affected by this spray.”
