Booked out and busy with AIMS

The AIMS Games is seeing Tauranga and Mount Maunganui accommodation and food providers booked out and busy as students from more than 150 schools tire themselves and work up an appetite.

About 6500 intermediate students from New Zealand, Australia and the Cook Islands have descended upon Tauranga this week – and the city's hospitality industry is welcoming them with open arms.

A boys' soccer tournament was one of the first sports tackled at the AIMS Games yesterday.

Tauranga's Motel Association president and owner of Bay Palm Motel Gail Fagen says as with most accommodation businesses in the area, they are fully booked – something that happens every year with the AIMS Games.

'It's a great benefit to the community, like any event that comes to the area.”

Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park manager Mark Hales says the tournament is a great event that their staff look forward to each year.

'It increases occupancy over the month with teams, not only for us but the wider community.”

Two schools including supporters have fully booked out the campground, including cabins, caravans and campsites.

As students are competing, and away, for most of the day Mark says there is not much need for them to increase staff numbers.

McDonald's Mount Maunganui manager Harry Singh says they are prepped for a busy week. Being located close to Blake Park, the business is one of the main sporting venues for the students, he says.

'We are expecting it to be a bit busier than last year. We have more staff on for the next week in preparation.”

Cobb n Co Tauranga owner Ben Gower says they are a 'little bit busier” during the AIMS Games week, but nothing significant.

'We may have five staff members on during an average week. During the games we might make that six.”

KiwiYo Bayfair is offering AIMS Games participants 10 per cent off their products during the week too.

The AIMS Games participants will be competing at various venues across Tauranga and Mount Maunganui for the remainder of the week.
