A media report that Tauranga house prices showed the sharpest drop in New Zealand in the last quarter is not supported by Quotable Value NZ.
Property values in Whangarei showed the steepest fall over the three months ending June 30 - at 12.4 per cent.
The next highest drop in property values was in Napier and Hastings, which experienced falls of 9.2 per cent, compared with the same three month period last year.
Palmerston North and Invercargill experienced slightly steeper drops than previously, at 8.4 and 8.2 per cent, respectively.
In the main centres, Christchurch dropped 7.3 per cent, Wellington 6.5 per cent, Auckland 5.9 per cent and Dunedin 4.5 per cent.
Tauranga's eight per cent drop is an improvement on the 9.4 per cent annual decline reported in the May figures.
SunLive real estate blogger Terry Rota says Tauranga prices will remain 'fairly level”.
Any upward trend is countered by the New Zealand dollar remaining strong against the United States dollar.
Property values are also advantaged by a lack of listings, says Terry.
This creates a limited supply and, on the buyer's side, the low interest rates and a perception that the market has leveled out stimulates the desire to buy now.
