A former Tauranga teacher convicted of paying $240 to twice watch teenagers have sex will have his future career prospects decided at a Teachers' Council disciplinary hearing next month.
Andrew Ray Loader, 49, a former Otumoetai College teacher, was convicted and sentenced to 100 hours' community work in March for contracting sex with a person under the age of 18.
Andrew Loader was sentenced to 100 hours community service in March this year.
According to the Teachers Council he's agreed not to teach until completion of a conduct investigation. Loader stopped teaching at the college after allegations came to light in December 2012.
'At this point in time his case will be going to the disciplinary tribunal,” says Teachers Council director Peter Lind.
'I don't have a specific date, I think it will be next month. They currently have a case potentially lasting five days. They have got a fairly full case load at the moment.”
Andrew Loader will have his teacher's registration cancelled if he is found guilty of serious misconduct by the disciplinary tribunal.
There are various criteria of serious misconduct, including bringing the profession into disrepute.
'What that means is that if, in your professional practice, the conduct that you are involved in is likely to affect the way you are able to perform your professional duties then that would be an example of bringing the profession into disrepute,” says Peter.
'Most teachers have to work with parents and they have to work with kids. Once something such as this goes out there, then it makes it difficult to work with the community that you have to have a professional relationship with. That is one of the criteria that the disciplinary tribunal will weigh up.”
Loader pleaded guilty in January this year to paying $120 to watch an 18-year-old Tauranga man have sex with his then 16-year-old girlfriend on a bed at his home on two occasions. Tauranga Police say the offending took place on November 3 and 10, 2012. Neither of the two teenagers attended the college at the time.
The charge was of contracting sex with a person under the age of 18 under the Prostitution Reform Act 2003. The nature of that charge relates to paying a man in a consensual sexual relationship with a woman under 18-years-old, to have sex while he watched.
Loader was recently listed by other media as one of three former teachers convicted of sexual related charges that are still on the Teachers Register. The other two are serving jail time.
They are paedophile James Parker, who was sentenced last month to preventive detention for 74 counts of sexual offending against boys, and is still registered.
As is Douglas Haora Martin, former assistant principal of Lincoln High School, who filmed up the skirts of 20 unsuspecting girls and women. He pleaded guilty in January and was sentenced in April to 10 months' home detention. His Teachers Council registration says he is referred to the disciplinary tribunal.
Education Minister Hekia Parata has asked for an urgent review of deregistration processes for teachers with serious convictions.
She met with the New Zealand Teachers Council yesterday and asked them to rapidly reassess the way de-registration of teachers is processed.
The Teachers Council maintains the register of teachers, which notes any disciplinary action taken.
Teachers seriously sanctioned remain on the register with the words "cancelled" and "censured" beside their names.
Loader currently has a note against his name on the register.

The wall ... Just leave em kids alone. Being a innocent kid at school and there are weird teachers inside and sickos in vans outside, what a crazy world we live in now .... Not so long ago these things were dealt with in a much more profound way, people knew where the boundary was and all knew the consequences, simple solutions and all remained remained well.
