The Labour Party's list MP working in Tauranga supports making some changes to MMP but believes it would be a waste to completely throw the electoral system out.
Jacinda Ardern made her comments as the government prepares the 14 year old electoral system for its first referendum since it was adopted in 1996.
Jacinda Ardern, currently a Labour Party list MP working in Tauranga.
The government has also announced that even if the public votes to retain Mixed Member Proportional at the 2011 general election, the system will still undergo a review by the Electoral Review Commission.
The current MMP system has allowed Jacinda to enter Parliament on her party list, without winning an electorate.
She accepts the view by some that MMP is unfair because it allows MPs to enter Parliament without winning an electorate seat, but believes those who vote for a party indirectly support the party's list.
'Every person who voted for Labour indicated support for Labour's list, so it's not the same as a direct vote but it's still democratic.”
Former Prime Minister Helen Clark described the First Past the Post system, which was replaced by MMP, as an 'elected dictatorship” and Jacinda says the Labour Party supports MMP because it is the fairest electoral system.
'I would hate to see us lose MMP. MMP has made our Parliament look like New Zealand. There will always be parties that represent particularly strong views that will struggle to win electorate seats.”
Jacinda does not support dumping dual candidacy if MMP is reviewed but is determined to win an electorate seat despite a safe spot on Labour's list.
'I do believe list MPs play an important role but I always hoped to be an elected MP as well.”

It would be good to hear Jacinda stating her own view for a change. On Breakfast TV this morning she commented that "Labour will be voting to support the continuation of MMP". Come on Jacinda - if you want to represent an electorate you are going to have get a bit brave and have an opinion of your own. Andrew

Responding to Robert Davies Simon Bridges, unlike Jacinda Ardern, did nail his preference to the "Supplementary Member" option. Jacinda clearly said that Labour would vote on "Party lines". - shame on them. Andrew
