The general manager of Tauranga's biggest taxi company is calling on the government to pay for security cameras in all taxis because of its regulations that force them to operate 24/7.
The demand for government action follows the killing of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini early Sunday morning.
Tauranga Mount Taxis general manager Bruce Rainey says government should pay for cameras in taxis.
'They should pay for these cameras to go in. They (the government) require us to be out at our own risk,” says Tauranga Mount Taxis general manager Bruce Rainey.
'If they didn't have that requirement, there wouldn't be any taxis out on the roads most nights.”
Bruce is calling for the government to pay for security cameras, despite the majority of the 50 Tauranga Mount Taxis already having cameras installed.
He says most drivers at Tauranga Mount Taxis would only make about $20-60 between Sunday night and Wednesday night and if companies were given the choice, most would only operate certain nights of the week.
'We are paying for providing a public service.”
Bruce says since the introduction of security cameras in most Tauranga Mount Taxis vehicles in October 2009, the rate of attacks and abuse against drivers has dropped dramatically.
He says drivers regularly experience difficulties with passengers but security cameras prevent situations escalating further.
'Our drivers basically get attacked or harassed every weekend – to a certain degree.”
Bruce rubbishes other reports suggesting security cameras do not work and says when security cameras were made compulsory in some Australian states, attacks against taxi drivers dropped by 75 per cent – proving security cameras work.
