The use of controversial chemical, hydrogen cyanamide, in New Zealand's kiwifruit industry is expected to come under fire tonight at a public meeting.
Hydrogen cyanamide is popularly known by brand names like Hicane, Breaker and Cyan.
It was originally developed as a pesticide, but these days it is used by kiwifruit growers to encourage bud break.
It's use has been the subject of considerable controversy with many claims it is causing serious health problems for those exposed to it. The European Union has responded by banning its use.
A lively meeting is expected tonight with a camera crew from television programme 20/20 in attendance. The Hui on Hicane begins at 7pm tonight, August 5 in the Te Puna School Hall, Te Puna Rd.
