Model UN at the Mount

The question of Arms Control and Trade is one of two topics on the table for discussion at a modal United Nations meeting at Mount Maunganui College today.

Year 9 and 10 students from Tauranga and Mount Maunganui are being joined by student from Rotorua, Taupo and Opotiki as they form teams to represent different countries at the United Nations Association of New Zealand event.

Organiser Gray Southon says the UNA is aimed at raising awareness of the United Nations and engagement within.

'The UNA runs model UN events in which the students gain skills and experience that helps them deal with the world that Helen Clark was talking about.

'They role-play UN General Assemblies.”

Mount Maunganui College principal Russell Gordon opened the event at 9.15am.

Students then went on to discuss Draft Resolution 1 – The Question of Arms Control and Trade before breaking for refreshments.

Gray says will discuss and debate Resolution 2 – The Question of Reduction of Fossil Fuels after they have had their final vote on Draft Resolution 1.

The event is expected to wrap up about 4pm.

Actually a big difference between this and the UN

The model UN looks to be full of promise and youth. The real UN if NZ's contribution is anything to go by has a former PM and MP presumably on their large government superannuation schemes in addition to huge UN salaries. Meantime in the real world people continue to starve and in places like Syria children die while the UN pontificates.
