Te Puke house a Shaw win

Tauranga could see more houses with cedar board exteriors if first-time home builders follow the trend of two Bay properties winning supreme awards in this year's Bay of Plenty/Central Plateau Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year competition.

Shaw Builders Limited has won the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for 2013 House of the Year with its build of a home in Te Puke.

The Tauranga-based company also won the ITM Renovation Award in the $250,000-$500,000 category and Outdoor Living Award.

Both properties have used cedar boarding in their designs – a feature which is highlighted by the judges in both designs.

Shaw Builders Limited's build impressed judges who say the builders' 'perfect” attention to detail, coupled with clear and concise workmanship, have helped them to create an incredibly well-executed home.

'The use of metal cladding, white plaster and cedar boarding on the exterior of the home is both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly well-executed. Metal cladding fixings are seamless, which is very difficult to achieve and a real credit to the builder,” says the judges.

'Clean, crisp lines continue throughout the interior of the home with immaculate finishing and perfect attention to detail. Clear and concise workmanship was crucial to the client's brief of a minimalist home, which the builder has achieved to a very high standard.”

Todd Grey Builders renovation also pleased the judges with its clever use of cedar boarding.

'This home has been brought into the 21st Century through clever use of cedar rusticated weatherboard and Alucabond on three dimensional features of the home, giving it a contemporary look and feel.

'The builder has transformed the upper floor into an open plan entertainers space and introduced an impressively large exterior steel portal supporting the new frontage to the home, which involved a high level of difficulty. The new kitchen and very large scullery are the hub of this entertainers space containing all the modern appliances, which are fitted to perfection.

'This renovation has been carried out skilfully and is a beautifully crafted response to the needs of the client.”

The Bay of Plenty/Central Plateau Region's top builders were celebrated at a gala dinner at Wairakei Resort last night.

There were a total of 23 entries in the competition, with 14 being from the Western Bay of Plenty.

Fowler Homes won gold for its Katikati entry in the $350,000-$450,000 category.

Haimes Building Limited, which was awarded House of the Year 2012, won the Nulook New Homes award in the $600,000 - $1 million category for its home in Taupo.
