A controversial Facebook page entitled ‘The Pakeha Party' is sparking a reaction in Tauranga residents with a local radio station receiving record feedback from listeners.
Moana Radio station DJ Pat Spellman received the biggest reaction from listeners during a talk time feedback section on the page that advocates for equal Pakeha/Maori rights he has ever had at the station.
Pakeha Party Facebook Page has more than 50,000 likes. Inset: Its creator David Ruck. Photo: TV3.
But Pat believes the hype will not translate to support for a registered political party.
Created on June 20 by Auckland businessman David Ruck, the page caused a flood of passionate postings on Facebook from throughout the country – and yesterday hit 50,000 ‘likes', and nearly 20,000 profile users ‘talking about this'.
The party's page lists itself as a non-government organisation for 'equal rights and benefits for the Pakeha of New Zealand”. Its stated mission is 'any additional benefits the Maori ask for exclusively for Maori - we ask for the same things for Pakeha”.
Pat says he initially planned to discuss the page with listeners in a seven-minute segment –which turned into an hour-long episode, with staff receiving at least 100 calls.
'It was probably the most reaction I've had from my audience in the last three years of doing my show. We spent the best part of an hour talking about it on the radio,” says Pat.
'I'm a huge advocate of people being able to say what they want and feel, but I think the whole thing is a joke – the Pakeha Party is in essence a complete contradiction to what they're saying, because ‘Pakeha' is actually a Maori word.”
Pat believes the hype over the page has come from its recent airing on prime-time current affairs television in New Zealand and as a topic on talkback radio.
'You could put a red tin can on Campbell Live, and Seven Sharp on TVNZ, and then get 50,000 people to like a [Facebook] page. So I don't think the numbers necessarily speak volumes for its support,” says Pat.
'I think New Zealand is a curious nation, and whenever you put anything on 7 o'clock current affairs shows – it's going to be huge. As soon as you're on that platform you're Facebook page advances to the level the Pakeha Party is at.”
Pat, who works for 'a predominantly Maori radio station” in Tauranga, was surprised to receive feedback from right across the board.
'I thought the opinion would be one-sided. But a lot of people continue to ask the question that ‘if there's a Maori Party surely there should be allowed to be a Pakeha Party?' which I suppose is a far enough question.”
But Pat does not think support exists for creation of an election party, based on the Pakeha Party page.
'There's a difference between a social media presence and being able to convince 500 people to financially back you, which is what you need to do to become a political party in NZ.”
'I guarantee now, this is just a phase and the novelty will wear off.”
Out of the 100 calls Moana Radio took on Tuesday afternoon, Pat estimates 25 people supported the page, or were 'in support of the notion of free speech, not necessarily agreeing with what the page is saying, but agreeing with the right to say what they think or feel”.
He makes the point that Facebook users cannot actually post on the page until they ‘like' the page.
'So you can't actually argue with the people on the page, and moderators on the page … so I'd say two-thirds of the people on there are there to argue with the point.”
Pat believes the page could be divisive for race relations in New Zealand.
'If it was an absolute forum for discussion, absolutely I would agree with it. But this page … all it is, is bickering and pointing at some unfortunate stats [statistics] and trying to use those to justify the argument that Maori people are taking this country for a ride, which I don't think is fair.”
Founder David Ruck told TV3 News yesterday he believes the page has become popular because it covers a subject that is always discussed behind closed doors.
But David also says he's found people are using the page as a venting vehicle and that he does not condone the racist comments and has since decided to moderate the page.
'This has all happened within the space of three to four days and it's been a huge media circus and a huge storm on Facebook … the reality is it's just a simple statement that I made on Facebook I assumed was just to my friends as being a bit of a joke. But of course, being a public forum it caught on and went crazy.”
David has told TV3 the initial name of the page was intended to be a ‘tongue in cheek' stab at a Mana Party's proposal to build cheap housing for Maori only.
'I've been enlightened by the NZ Herald that they intend to build cheap housing for everybody.”
David also says while he did not initially setup the page with political intentions, he now feels, 'as though I'm letting the country down if I didn't get something sorted out and handed over”.
The Auckland businessman also told TV3 News he looks to use comments received on the page to help form an election party with policies chosen via rating from page's users through a ‘yes' ‘no' option box.

Yes pakeha is a maori word and derogatory and racist reference at that directed to anyone that looked like a European settler. In this country everyone should be referred to as NZers or kiwis and if some want to choose some other handle that is their call go for it but don't expect others to endorse or pander to it.Suggestion to those who support the Pakeha party principles then join up with ONE LAW 4 ALL PARTY and stop the rorting and pillaging of NZs assets.

....dumb Why do people who create controversy of race issues always say, 'oh i was only doing it for a joke' (the reality is it's just a simple statement that I made on Facebook I assumed was just to my friends as being a bit of a joke.)

Watch all the privileged iwi etc call us racist because we want the same rights and privileges as them! There will be references to "far right" and 'Hitler' etc, but they happily sit there accepting all those race based privileges/rights etc that we are denied. Go for it David!!!

There is already an existing party that supports equal rights for all NZ'ers, so no need for a new one. Put your support behind the new Conservative Party, read their policies on Maori, and you'll find that they want what the vast majority of Kiwis want - a democratic system where there is no discrimination or favouritism on the basis of race. It is time to unite to abolish the cancer of racism and apartheid infecting our democracy, and time to restore some honesty in the corrupt system of government that we have at present. Racism should play no part in the future of our children.

Good on you Pat for telling the story - given the interest there is out there in the Pakeha Party I'm surprised there are not more comments on this page. Could it be that a large chunk of the correspondents to the letters section of the Weekend Sun do not know how to use a computer?
Devisive
Posted on 11-07-2013 19:56 | By Jitter
The comment that the facebook page could be devisive is ridiculous. It is no more devisive than having a Maori party which is wholly racist. The person who wrote that comment is not thinking straight and is obviously biased towards Maori.

Actually having the Pakeha party will level out the racist situation, it is a sound and sensible thing to do as it effectively is saying, what you have we all have, to be otherwise is racist.

Key and Finlayson might be looking over their shoulders soon, i don't think the pakeha party will go anywhere but hopefully 1law4all will end up with their face book members, and then it will be all on. Imagine a conversation between Key and the rat at the next election and 1law4all is looking at a good showing at the polls, hey Ratty boy, can you prove the history that we used to settled all those TOW claims with, i got a call from some fellas called David Round and Bruce Moon, they reckoned it was all dodgey. Ratty to Johny boy truth is Johny boy it was, (i mean real dodgey)!!! know of any country we can go and they can't extradite us?, i think we better start looking.

Id vote for them, about time someone stuck up for our rights. Please explain to me why Maori get TAXPAYER FUNDED MAORI ONLY HOUSING. Is this not discrimination and racism? Maori are not the only families living in poverty or struggling to pay rent, how about helping those families out instead of discriminating and giving out free housing based on race. And Maori would love to think we all have equal rights and they dont get any benefit. Well I just named one. If we set up a pakeha only housing complex we would be labelled racist. Its only racist if youre a pakeha in this country is the view Im getting.
must unite as one

Under the 'Proceeds Of Crime Act' we might get our $35 Billion refunded from corporate maori as their claims are basically lies and history can prove it. "Twisting The Treaty" with its thorough research has me convinced. Its been out for about 6 months but not one fact has been disproved yet!

At the end of the day this country will never be an equal rights country, there are too many exaggerated stories and greed for this to ever happen, we will continue to pay! I like the idea of this type of party and what they stand for, must admit think the name needs to change though, but why not have a party that stand for equal rights, what's so wrong with that? These parties are starting up because the "majority" of nz has had enough of "handouts"! and before anyone goes presuming this is a rascist comment bear in mind I have both a Maori and pakeha background

With Reef... as for the comment about Maori only housing, the social housing unit is for ALL NZers, but u have to Fit the criteria to get the funding, u can look it up on the internet, same Fund Destiny church wants to use to set up their village. Work together NZ, our kids deserve our BEST.
Good Idea

It's time there was a party simply for "our people", to coin a much used phrase by "Maori" leaders.

At last some people with a sense of how most New Zealanders are feeling. Fed up with special treatment to the select few. When will these politicians realize it is them that creates racism in NZ and that now after all this time and the 1/16th bullshit for a free handout, that NZ is for everyone, not just for IWI, just think how well off the country would be and a better standard of living for all, if all those zillions of tax payers dollars had been put to better use for all of the population! Awesome we all have the opportunity come election time to get rid of Findlayson and his cronies, don't just think about changes and make comments on facebook, Lets make a real change and get someone like the Conservative party or I hate the word 'Pakeha' party in government to stop the handouts and special treatment, it should be a level playing field for every New Zealander, not just for Maori . God forbid if a few Maoriori where discovered still alive in the bush, think how much money they could screw the Maori party and Iwi for, well not really we would have to pay as usual! WE ARE ALL KIWI'S END OF STORY! NUFF SAID!
Hang on a minute

I agree with you all in principle, BUT, If I have to get permission to hunt or fish, I would rather have to ask my maori mates than some obnoxious fat tobacco chewing millionaire from Texas. Try hunting on Ngamatea station and see how you get on. On balance, there are actually 2 sides to this argument and we need to listen to them all rather than the extreme maoris or the extreme pakehas.

What are you saying bro, The Non-Maori Party is only there to level up the playing field for all of New Zealanders, what's the problem? What has all of that got to do with Texas? Why would we want to ask you for permission? Had enough of "any obnoxious fat tobacco chewing millionaire from Texan" telling us NZ what we are doing, perhaps you should go back to the US/Texas?

@rocco, the word PAKEHA or PALANGI is not derogatory/racist, go find out its meaning, its just another ethnic language you don't like to hear because its' ETHNIC. To all those moaning on this news item that our country should be called NZers only, it does not look like yous want any asians, islanders, somalians, africans etc in the mix aye, you are only worried about yourselves, scared that the MAARIEES will take everything from you.

My hypothetical argument was completely lost on Plonker. I am a NZ born kiwi - not from Texas, but I guess everyone else knew that. My argument was that extremism on any side, is not constructive, let alone objective.

Anyone coming to NZ should be a "New Zealander" if you are not prepared to fit in then leave, that applies to all ethnic groups, you are in NZ so live accordingly. If you want to talk your own lingo fine, you want to paddle around in a hollow log fine ... whatever you do respect others and don't get in their way, most importantly respect the right of others to have the same freedoms that you also expect, if something you do affects someone else then back off. What you don't seem to realize is that NZ has many cultures not just Maori. They are all immigrants and the rules apply to all the same as soon as that is not so then it is a preference of one over another, that means things are starting then to look like a preference based on colour of skin or whatever.

This is a typical problem we have as maori had no written history(whitch by the way has come in very handy for them!)this is an example, google pakeha, or look in old history books for a meaning, when we are good pakeha it means pale skin people of the forest or the other people, and when we are bad pakeha or disliked pakeha can mean white maggot, white froth or scum, as in what washes up on the beach, also in the maori dictionary it clearly states it is a (RACIST) term to describe us of european decent , google it read the dictionary or a few history books its there for anyone to see. The history behind the meaning of pakeha is just like the rest of our history, bent, abused, and mostly unfathomable due to so many (EXPERTS) making it up to suit the treaty troughing lawyers or the likes of Finlayson who is on a one man mission to bankrupt the country.

Pakeha
Posted on 19-07-2013 19:24 | By Blessed
The traditional word Pakeha was used to describe 'Drift wood' the color of European skin reminded Maori of the color of Drift wood, eventually the meaning was changed to 'Skin color'.. their are some Maori that carry the name Pakeha as a 1st name because of Skin color, If u choose to take it offensively, it is ur choice. Upokokohua is the most offensive thing u can say in the Maori Language,it always has been. If u had the chance to talk to Maori elders, u wld know that. NZ History was Ugly on both sides, Stop blaming Maori or Pakeha 4 our countries problems, FYI Pakeha Party dont support '1 law 4 all' policies
